6th Cavalry Museum
August 2021
August has been a whirlwind! Schools are back in session and are already feeling the effects of COVID; adjusting in-person and hybrid learning against positive cases in the schools.

Visitors to the museum are encouraged to wear masks if they have not been vaccinated and hand sanitizer is available throughout the museum. Please be safe and say an extra prayer for the healthcare workers and teachers.

Stay cool out there!

Museum Presents Field Trip Opportunity to Local School Systems

Adapting to the “new normal” that our schools are faced with, the museum presented a virtual field trip to area Chattanooga school teachers encouraging them to book their class field trip. The presentation was well received with educators asking questions and learned how a trip to the 6th Cavalry Museum will impact their student’s learning experience and bring history to life.

The museum was also invited to present our 5th Grade School Day Program and field trips for other grades to Catoosa County Schools. Several schools have called to learn more about our offerings.
New WAC Booklet Donated

The family of Rebecca Oletha Romerill, who enlisted in the WACs in 1943 and did her basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, donated her photo album and mementoes to the museum.

A never before seen color booklet, “The Story of the WAC in the ETO,” was part of the treasure trove. The booklet has been reproduced and sent to other museums who feature the Women’s Army Corps for their collections.

The 6888th is featured in the booklet and a display poster has been added to the exhibit.
We Reached Our Modern Woodmen of America Community Grant Goal!

Modern Woodmen of America, the fraternal financial services company that has supported the museum for over 10 years, is helping again in 2021.

We raised $2,840 as the required match and will receive a $2,500 donation to support the tank restoration. Thank you to everyone who contributed and bought t-shirts and books. The Kiwanis Club of Fort Oglethorpe donated $500 to ensure the goal was met.
Schools and Libraries Appreciate Book Donations

The museum is always happy to receive a thank you for supporting our local schools. Through the AACR grant, the museum donated 52 books (for a total value of $1,510) to every school library in Catoosa and Walker County along with the public libraries.

“Thank you for the book donation to each of our schools and for the continued partnership with the 6th Cavalry Museum,” wrote Walker County School Superintendent Damon Raines.

We're always happy to help!
