Superintendent's Weekly Message

Thank you to all of the families who attended our Incoming TK/Kinder Informational Day and our Prospective Hermosa Valley Preview Day. We are excited to announce that new student enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year is now open! We invite your child(ren) to come thrive with us in a district dedicated to excellence and student success.

At this time, we are prioritizing enrollment for residents within the Hermosa Beach City School District (HBCSD). If you are a resident, please complete the online student enrollment process here. Completing your enrollment allows both the district and STAR Education, our afterschool care and enrichment program, to accurately plan and staff. For detailed information on the enrollment process, required documentation, and to access the online enrollment portal, please visit our Enrollment & Registration page.

For families residing outside our district boundaries, we welcome your interest in joining our community. Interdistrict Attendance Permits Applications will be accepted from January 13, 2025, through March 31, 2025. Please note that applications submitted during this time are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis. If necessary, a lottery will be conducted on April 4, 2025, to establish a prioritized waitlist. Visit our Interdistrict Attendance Permits page for more information.

We look forward to welcoming new students and families to our district. If you know of a family in the area with school-aged students, we encourage you to share our information and website with them. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our school offices.

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Superintendent of Schools, Hermosa Beach City School District

Be Safe, Be SMART, Hermosa!

As part of our ongoing “Be Safe, Be SMART” campaign, the Hermosa Beach City School District has teamed up with the Hermosa Beach Police Department and Hermosa Cyclery this month to share important E-Bike Safety Tips with our students, staff, and community. This month's video emphasizes the importance of brake maintenance to ensure safe and smooth riding. Remember, always, "Be Safe, Be SMART, Hermosa!" Stay tuned for more videos featuring additional safety tips and community partners each month through the end of the school year.

Tech Safety Coffee Talk

Join us for Tech Safety Coffee Talk on Wednesday, February 5, at 9:00 AM in the Hermosa Valley Conference Room 4. This engaging session will feature Julie Cordua, CEO of Thorn.org, and a local Hermosa parent who is dedicated to protecting children online. Julie will discuss her organization's vital mission to combat online child sex abuse and trafficking while sharing practical strategies to help parents navigate these difficult yet essential conversations with their kids. This event is open to all adults, and coffee will be provided. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a leading expert on child safety and technology and gain valuable insights on creating a safer digital environment for our children.

Spread Kindness: Make This Week Count!

It’s time for The Great Kindness Challenge! This week, let’s come together to spread kindness and make Hermosa Beach City School District a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.

We encourage our students to:

  • Invite someone new to sit with you at lunch.
  • Compliment or thank a teacher or staff member.
  • Help a classmate with their work or a task.
  • Write a positive note to someone who could use a boost.

In addition to showing kindness to others, don’t forget to be kind to yourself. If you or a family member needs extra support, HBCSD offers resources through Care Solace.

  • Call (888) 515-0595, available 24/7 in over 50 languages.
  • Visit caresolace.com/hbcsd to connect with care providers.

Thank you for joining us in spreading kindness this week. Together, we can make a difference!

Hermosa View School Interim Principal News

I had a wonderful first week with your students! It was so amazing being on campus and meeting the staff and students. Thank you, parents and guardians, so much for sharing your children with us. They are such gems, and we love seeing their smiles when they come to school.

On Friday, we held our flag assemblies, where we celebrated students who exemplify how to be responsible by following our S.U.R.F. behavior expectations. It was also nice seeing so many families in attendance.

This week, we’re excited to participate in The Great Kindness Challenge Week. Let’s all make an extra effort to lead with kindness every day!

Kind regards,

Sandy Skora, Hermosa View Interim Principal

Next week, Hermosa Vista School will participate in The Great Kindness Challenge, a special opportunity to focus on and celebrate acts of kindness. I invite you to join us in encouraging students to practice respect and kindness toward one another and adults. At home, you can support this effort by discussing what respectful communication sounds like and modeling kindness in your family’s daily interactions. Simple actions such as greeting adults with “hello” or “good morning,” using polite phrases like “please,” “thank you,” and “sorry,” and following directions can make a big difference. Our goal is to create a culture of respect and kindness toward everyone who comes onto our campus, including teachers, fellow students, parent volunteers, office staff, maintenance workers, substitutes, support staff, and noon duty aides. Together, we can take meaningful steps to foster a school community that values kindness and respect, not just during this week but every day. Thank you for your continued partnership in nurturing these important values!

Warmly,

Hillary Overbeck, Hermosa Vista Principal

Last week, we held our final E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety Course. Students who participated but have not yet picked up their stickers can do so during nutrition in the front office. Please note that we will be auditing stickers on January 31st, and any E-Bikes or E-Scooters without a verified and validated sticker will be confiscated.

Students not in compliance will not be allowed to bring these items to campus until they complete a qualified safety course. If you missed this past class, we have partnered with PedalAce and eBikeSense to offer additional courses to meet the requirement.

Please note – it is illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to ride a Class 3 E-Bike in the state of California.

This week, we’re celebrating The Great Kindness Challenge! Students will focus on care, respect, and inclusion through small acts of kindness that make a big difference. Let’s work together to spread positivity and kindness!

As an early reminder, the Presidents’ Holidays Break will be from February 10th through the 17th. Please plan accordingly!

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal
