National Night Out

National Night Out will take place the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022. Around two dozen 'neighborhood' parties have signed up with the City of Lakeway to participate in the event this year. Here is a breakdown of what to expect:

NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS

Lakeway police officers, city staff and elected officials will make their rounds at the various neighborhood events throughout Lakeway. The event is designed to heighten crime-prevention awareness, and send a message that our neighborhoods are organized and taking a stand against crime. It's also a chance to meet your other neighbors and try out some great home-cooked food in the process. If you aren't aware of an event taking place, be sure to ask others along your street the time and location of a party that may be planned near your home.

LAKEWAY PD OPEN HOUSE

Besides neighborhood events, the Lakeway Police Department will also host a special Open House that evening from 4 p.m. through 7 p.m. The Open House will give the public a chance to tour the police department, meet with various departments, check out some of the training simulations, and grab some snacks. Whether you have a party to attend that evening or you don't, we invite you to stop by the Lakeway Police Department!

Remembering Former Mayor Steve Swan

Former Lakeway Mayor Steve Swan passed away last Friday, Sept. 23, 2022. The former mayor volunteered in a variety of roles for the City of Lakeway, including serving as chair of the Heritage Commission (now, Heritage Committee), Lakeway City Council (2003-2005), as well as mayor pro tem (2004) and mayor (2005-2009). Lakeway Civic Corporation also recently named him Citizen of the Year for 2021. During his tenure as mayor, he helped in the initial development phase of the local hospital, oversaw the annexation of the land that would become Serene Hills, started the process of digitizing city records and led efforts in the creation of the City's website. Suicide Prevention Month

Officers and staff with the Lakeway Police Department wore yellow ribbons this month to help bring awareness during Suicide Prevention Month, which takes place in September. Suicide is currently the fourth leading cause of death among 15 to 19 year-olds, and ages 85 and older have the highest rate of suicide. While males make up about 49% of the population, they account for 80% of all suicides. In 2020, nearly 46,000 people died by suicide in the United States (or about one death every 11 minutes), with 1.2 million adults attempting suicide that same year.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org. The new 988 number went into effect just a few months ago with the Federal Communications Commission designating 988 as the new three-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The Lakeway Police Department also has a specialized Victim Assistant Coordinator on staff. If you need additional help finding resources, please call the Lakeway Police Department at (512) 261-2800.
