Camp Kawartha is seeding Environmental Leaders
|
The best way to foster environmental leaders – is to inspire them!
For the past 6 years, Camp Kawartha has been working with Trent University’s School of Education in a unique
Eco Mentor program.
Student teachers participate in a series of workshops conducted by Camp Kawartha Staff and Trent Faculty to help them learn best practices in environmental education. They learn about how to teach using nearby nature spaces, how to discuss environmental issues with a sense of hope and empowerment and how to engage students with citizen science. After graduating, educators receive a certificate from both Trent and Camp Kawartha attesting to their skills as environmental educators and the fact that they are now prepared to serve as their future school’s Eco Mentor – both for students and for other teachers.
We're proud to say that this model of environmental education has been adopted by four other universities and that Camp Kawartha has recently partnered with Fleming College to do the same thing. We are training early childhood educators on best practices in environmental education and seeding tomorrow’s environmental leaders, today!

As with every Board of Directors of a not-for-profit charity, members sign up, dedicate many hours to the cause, and then serve out their term. We have had a number of Board members who have put so much energy, heart and dedication into our organization and sadly their time with us has come to a close. We thank them warmly for their devotion and service. Thanks to the work of our past Board of Directors and with the help of our new members, Camp Kawartha is now able to embark on its bold plan of becoming a nationally recognized environmental leadership centre. Stay tuned!

Philanthropy Coordinator Susan Ramey thanks retiring Board Member Emmet Connolly for his years of service.

We are excited to welcome aboard three new board members:
Andrea Gilders, Anna Lee
, and
Andrew Marshall.
We look forward to working these talented members as we work towards fostering a culture of stewardship and environmental leadership in children and adults of all ages.

Wailers Concert - It's a Wrap!
|
|
The Wakami Wailers were Camp Kawartha's special guests on Saturday, March 24th, and provided over 70 guests with a rousing evening of songs and stories of Canada!
“We were thrilled to have the Wailers back again.” says Executive Director, Jacob Rodenburg. “They always deliver an engaging performance, and I heard nothing but positive and enthusiastic comments from our guests. They really bring history to life through song and story. Our thanks for sharing their gift of music!”
|
|
Together since 1981, this enduring band has entertained and educated thousands about our logging, unique characters, and history of the provincial parks. The Wailers have released three CDs, and are set to release a fourth –
Un, Deux, Trois…Four
.
|
|
Hosted at the Gordon Best Theatre in downtown Peterborough, the event raised funds for Camp Kawartha's programming. Guests came from as far away as Ottawa. Opening for the Wailers were Glen Caradus and Michael Ketemer whose comedic take on the Canoe Alphabet song had guests laughing and applauding loudly.
It was a great event, and a welcome party! Thanks to all who attended.

Just who are the Critters in your 'Neighbourwood'?
|
For most of us our neighbourhood consists of houses, our neighbours, buildings, cars and streets. We forget that we also share this space with animals, plants, trees, wildflowers – the living systems that nourish and sustain us all. We like to call the place where both nature and people thrive – a 'neighbourwood'.
At Camp Kawartha throughout the school year (fall, winter and spring), students from near and far, come to discover who lives in our neighbourwood.
From following animal tracks to hand feeding chickadees, from collecting sap to participating in dramatized animal hikes, students learn more about the wildlife that resides right there in their own backyard. Camp Kawartha’s talented staff, many who are teacher trained, use science, puppetry, storytelling, games and music to teach over 80 curriculum linked outdoor and environmental programs. They inspire students to become more engaged in their natural communities and inspired by their natural neighbours.

philanthropy@campkawartha.ca with the subject line
“My Best Guess”.
The winner will be announced in our May newsletter.
