Winter just won't let go...
and unfortunately, that means we were closed today and will be postponing tonight's event, "Conservation Through Land Trust." Stay tuned for announcements about a rescheduled date for the talk. We hope to be back at the library tomorrow once this slow-moving storm has cleared.

Even though I'm feeling a little bit mad at Mother Earth for pulling the rug out on summer weather, we're still celebrating Earth Day this weekend. We have a lot of organizations, businesses, and individuals signed up to participate, including some new faces this year. Hope we'll see you there!

Earth Day Celebration

The Mercer Public Library will host our annual Earth Day Fair at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. Join us for a free event sharing ways you can tread more lightly on the earth. There will be information and activities for all ages, recycling, and door prizes!

There are already over a dozen area organizations, businesses, and individuals signed up to participate. The Fair will also include Mercer Bird City activities and information, including a talk on Birding in the Northwoods with John Bates at the conclusion of the fair at noon. Free recycling will be available for small electronics, plastic bags and film, batteries, denim, and more, and you can grab lunch or a snack with the Mercer Leos. If you or your organization would like to be an exhibitor at the Fair, please call the library at 715-476-2366. There's no cost to participate.

Other events coming up during Earth Day week include:
  • Scandinavian Loop Weaving Class with Deb Patton on Tuesday, April 18. Note: Registration for this event is full, but we are taking names for a waitlist for a future class, if there is interest. Give us a call!
  • Rock Painting Contest: Every year we host an art contest associated with our Earth Day Fair, and this year it's a rock painting contest for all ages, including adults! Check out the guidelines on our website and stop by all this week during normal library hours to use our supplies to paint some rocks!

Salamanders: a free Discovery Center program

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 3 at 12:00 p.m. -- Let’s look under some logs and find out about the different species of salamanders that call Wisconsin home!

Join North Lakeland Discovery Center Naturalist Hannah Gargrave and her two pet tiger salamanders in learning about these neat amphibians, their adaptations, and the habitats in which they live. This program is part of the Discovery Center’s Knowledge at Noon series, which brings naturalists to public libraries around the Center’s service area. All are welcome to this free program, with donations to the Discovery Center gratefully accepted.
