Program Newsletter | 4th Quarter, 2024

Season's Greetings, Amani!

It has been an incredible year for us at the HHI Resilient Communities Program. We thank you for your support, which has been instrumental to the success of our research, convening and communications work in the Philippines and Nepal!

Before we bid goodbye to 2024, we would like to highlight some of the program’s key achievements from last quarter.

Research Highlights

Disaster Preparedness and Climate Perceptions in the Philippines

In 2024 we generated evidence on disaster preparedness and climate perceptions in the Philippines through a nationwide representative survey.

Last quarter we began disseminating insights from the survey through information sheets highlighting key findings on disaster preparedness, recovery, and climate change adaptation efforts among Filipinos and persons with disabilities.

We will share more targeted data and information from our nationwide survey with you in the new year, including the mental health impacts of disasters and climate change and preparedness levels of micro, small and medium enterprises. Stay tuned to our website and social media platforms!

Earlier this year, we began data collection for our qualitative case study on climate resilience and women’s leadership in Koshi Province, Nepal. We are interviewing women leaders from local governments, non-governmental organizations, cooperatives, and community-based organizations to document how these women groups in the region are addressing climate threats at the community level.

Convening and Engagement Highlights

Strengthening Connections with Nepal Government

RC

The virtual meeting was attended by [counterclockwise] our project lead-Nepal, Ganesh Dhungana; program director, Dr. Vincenzo Bollettino; strategy and program manager, Hannah Stoddard; and Nepal’s State Minister for Forests and Environment, Hon. Rupa BK.

To generate a lasting impact on communities affected by climate-related hazards in Nepal, we strive to reinforce our engagement and connections with various local actors, including the government. Our team recently met with Hon. Rupa BK, Nepal’s State Minister for Forests and Environment. During the meeting, we had a comprehensive discussion of HHI Resilient Communities’ ongoing research on women's leadership in climate resilience building in Koshi province. The State Minister warmly appreciated HHI's work in supporting Nepalese communities in building resilience. She highlighted how climate change is becoming a pressing issue in the country and showed her interest in linking HHI's ongoing research findings in designing programs to address gaps and the need to support women-led initiatives for climate change adaptation.

We had Fun at APMCDRR!

RC

Thank you to everyone who visited our exhibitor booth at the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) on 14-17 October 2024 in Metro Manila, Philippines!

We had a fantastic time engaging with different disaster and climate resilience champions from all over the Asia-Pacific. We were grateful for the opportunity to share and learn about each other’s work in the region and think about ways to collaborate in the future. Until next time!

Our project and communications manager, Mark Daza, traveled to Australia in November for the second leg of study tours and research sessions under the Indo-Pacific Cooperation Network (IPCN). As a network member and fellow, Mark also participated in the 2024 National Conference of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA). In July, Mark and his fellow IPCN members visited Japan.

IPCN is an interdisciplinary initiative co-organized by the AIIA and the Japan Foundation. It fosters collaboration among emerging experts from various fields, particularly in addressing transnational challenges such as disaster resilience, geopolitical dynamics, and climate change within the Indo-Pacific region.

Help Us Improve Our Work

We continuously strive to improve our work to have a larger and more substantial impact on the DRR and CCA systems. To do this, we need your help assessing our programming and recommending impactful activities for 2025 onwards.
