Shaping Safer Futures Through the Humanities
As a second-generation Indo-Caribbean woman and researcher, Cassandra Ramdath has built her work around community voice, health, and safety. Guided by cultural awareness and inclusion, she leads the Youth for Tomorrow Fellowship, a youth-led, multimedia storytelling project that uplifts the priorities of gun violence survivors in Southeast DC.
Blending education and advocacy, the fellowship transforms powerful oral histories into a digital piece that prioritizes the humanity of each survivor over statistics. For Cassandra, humanities are about keeping people at the center of the work. “Our oral histories breathe life into research, not just to inform, but to remind people of the human behind the number ... Oral histories aren’t just archived, they’re lived, and it’s our job to help people feel that aliveness.”
Through the Youth for Tomorrow Fellowship, Cassandra hopes people will gain not only deeper empathy, but also a stronger urgency to address the root causes of gun violence, which disproportionately impact communities of color. “Stories carry solutions that often challenge the mainstream media,” she says. By listening closely to youth and survivors, Cassandra believes, “we can build safer, more just futures rooted in truth, healing, and collective responsibility.”
This spring, Cassandra is most excited to see how the project’s youth fellow brings their creativity and leadership into collaboration with survivors of gun violence. “I look forward to witnessing the transformation of survivor stories into an education and advocacy initiative, opening new conversations around community healing, safety, and justice.”
The Youth for Tomorrow Fellowship is supported in part by the 2025 Beyond the Archives DC Oral History Collaborative Grant. Follow Cassandra's work with the Georgetown Instagram at @cicsgeorgetownlaw or reach out directly at cassandra.ramdath@georgetown.edu to learn more.
