GATES, GLASSES, & GUTS

In August, our Farms throw open their gates, the Beverage Trail pours its best, and one village’s independent spirit finally gets its due.

↪ This month, ↪ farms across three counties throw open their gates, ↪ Otsego County makes its case for the art of slowing down — sipping and savoring your way through a genuinely stacked lineup of breweries, wineries, cideries, and distilleries. ↪ Add a detour to a village most people never find on their GPS (but should), ↪ plus Butternut Valley Days settling into its rightful place on the calendar.

August is shaping up to be the best kind of stacked.

GATE CRASHERS WELCOME

Mark your calendar - Saturday, August 29 marks the 14th Annual Family Farm Day organized by the Cornell Cooperative Extension. Farms across Otsego, Schoharie, and Delaware Counties throw open their gates from 10 AM to 4 PM for one glorious, self-guided day of farm-fresh everything: cheese curds, fresh cider, tractor selfies, and the works. Plan your route, pack a cooler for the haul home, and leave the pups behind — this one's strictly a people party. Full details and the interactive farm map await at FamilyFarmDay.org.

DRINK THE COUNTY DRY. (RESPONSIBLY)

Before baseball made this county famous, hops did. We were once the hops-growing capital of North America, and that spirit never really left. The Cooperstown Beverage Trail connects five world-class producers across 37 miles: Montezuma Winery, Fly Creek Cider Mill, Ommegang, Northway Brewing Hop House, and the Cooperstown Brewing Company, plus many more. Pick up a trail map at any stop, collect all five stamps, and earn a free trail gift. Sip your way across the county, pack the car with your favorites, and call it a very good Saturday.

WORTH THE DETOUR

Cooperstown is where the story starts. Every other main street in Otsego County is where it goes.

GILBERTSVILLE

ONE GREAT DAM DAY TRIP

Three hundred people. 114 historic buildings. A bakehouse that opens at 7, a sculpture park with no admission, a Tudor mansion that stops people cold, and a restaurant that's been serving dinner since 1835. The Village of Gilbertsville fought the Feds trying to put in a dam for sixty years and won. Mayor Aidan Woishnis wrote the best kind of day trip guide. Forty-five minutes from Cooperstown and somehow still a secret.

BUTTERNUT VALLEY DAYS

Live music, local vendors, and a valley that earns the drive. Three days. Two weekends. One very good reason to go.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

AUG 12, & 17

Chamber music, bluegrass, and a brass quintet walk into a church and a farmhouse — this is the Cooperstown Summer Music Festival, and it is exactly as good as that sounds.

AUG 5, 6, 12 & 13

Shakespeare meets Woodstock on the shores of Otsego Lake - As You Like It goes full 1969, with hippie communes, wandering troubadours, and a wayward bear thanks to the Glimmer Globe Theatre at the Fenimore Art Museum every Wednesday and Thursday through August 13.
