San Francisco 49ers 24, Denver Broncos 14

Levi's Stadium

Sunday,October 4, 2026

The 3-3 halftime score, with these two high-powered, prolific offenses confounded both logic and experts. For the Niners, there were some unusual (but predictable) calls on third and short situations. For the

Broncos, it was Warner-Greenlaw and Co. which repeatedly stifled Denver drives.

The second half had plenty of action from two teams known for 'second half' performances. The 49ers struck first as Purdy, after a key fumble recovery of a 49er punt by #33, Siran Neal, scrambled to find Deebo for a TD (10-3). A Denver FG made it (10-6) as the fourth quarter began. CMC powered in for a TD (17-6), but Denver retaliated with a TD pass from Nix to Waddle (17-14, with the 2-pt. conversion). Next, a short Purdy pass led to a one-for-the-books -- A KITTLEMANIA TD -- and a (24-14) 49er lead. A Bronco missed FG ended the game with a San Francisco 49ers victory.

Opposing Offensive Strategies

& Quandaries

Have An Opinion?

49ers Skipper Kyle Shanahan and Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson make fascinating subjects for a study in contrast and comparison because few coaches better demonstrate how a shared offensive foundation can produce

strikingly different systems.

Both speak much of the same offensive language:

pre-snap motion, play-action deception and a

running game designed to make every call

strengthen the next.

Shanahan favors disciplined outside-zone structure,

bootlegs and clearly defined quarterback reads;

Johnson counters with a broader running menu,

rotating backs, inventive personnel packages

and greater freedom to adapt.

Their methods differ—but both aim to keep defenses

reacting instead of thinking.

-- Afterword --

And On Sunday, There Was Enough

Before the beginning, there was hope. Then came the kickoff, and hope requested protective equipment.

Chicago beat the Jets, 23–12, with Kyle Monangai running for 146 yards and two touchdowns. The earth opened, and he went through it. The Jets, despite their name, spent much of the afternoon awaiting clearance.

In Santa Clara, the 49ers beat Denver, 24–14. Brock Purdy threw two touchdown passes; Christian McCaffrey ran for another. San Francisco rose to 4–0. The Broncos discovered that a journey west does not necessarily lead to enlightenment.

I have spent years learning to release attachment. Apparently, this does not include football.

For one Sunday, my Chicago heart and California address were in complete agreement. No argument with the universe. No bargaining with the television. Just two victories resting on the table like ripe oranges.

Let tomorrow bring its mysteries.

Tonight, even the empty chair looked pleased.

Oracle Park, San Francisco, CA

Friday, September 25, 2026

San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb is presented with the Willie Mac Award for being the most inspirational team player in 2026. Webb has been with the Giants for 12 years since being drafted in 2014 and making his major league

debut in 2019.

Wife Sharidan and daughter Mila Rose were on the field to

 witness Logan's Willie Mac award.

Dodgers pitcher Tarik Skubal threw seven scoreless innings on just 75 pitches. Skubal was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in August in exchange for three minor-league prospects,

rather than a cash purchase.

Shohei Ohtani had a quiet night with no hits, no runs,

no walks and no RBIs.

Los Angeles Dodgers Mookie Betts slid safely into third base in the first inning. Betts finished the 2026 season in torrid fashion and in September batted .337/.438/.674 with 7

home runs, 9 doubles, 20 runs, and 22 RBIs.

San Francisco Giants outfielder Bo Davidson (94) appears to emerge from a Corona beach scene while recording an out.

The San Francisco Giants' 2026 season came to an end on September 27, with a final record of 65-97 (.401 winning percentage), in fourth place and ahead of the Colorado Rockies. Major League Baseball owners are widely expected to impose a lockout when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires on December 1. It is unclear if MLB will resume in the spring. Giants stamp commitment to Vitello as Posey reflects on tough 2026

By Maria Guardado

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants hoped to hit the ground running after making the bold decision to hire manager Tony Vitello out of the University of Tennessee last October. Instead, they never really found their stride in 2026.

Hampered by an inconsistent offense, a leaky bullpen and a cascade of injuries, the Giants quickly sank in the standings and ultimately finished out of the playoff picture for the ninth time in the last 10 years. They never won four straight games in Vitello’s first year at the helm, culminating in a disastrous 97-loss season that will go down as one of the worst in the San Francisco era.

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed WR Dante Pettis to the team's practice squad.

Pettis (6-1, 195) was originally drafted by the San Franisco 49ers in the second round (44th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. Throughout his seven-year NFL career with the 49ers (2018-20), New York Giants (2020-21), Chicago Bears (2022), New Orleans Saints (2024-25) and Buffalo Bills (2026), he has appeared in 66 games (19 starts) and registered 92 receptions for 1,231 yards and 13 touchdowns through the air to go along with three carries for 35 yards on the ground. In 2026, Pettis signed with the Bills on July 31, before being waived by the team on August 29.

A 30-year-old native of San Clemente, CA, Pettis attended the University of Washington (2014-17) where he appeared in 53 games (31 starts) and totaled 163 receptions for 2,256 yards and 24 touchdowns through the air and added four carries for 42 yards on the ground.

St. Louis Slinger Dog

If you ever arrive in time at Busch Stadium, home to the

St. Louis Cardinals, to enjoy a game and have breakfast, you will find a fun, portable twist on the classic St. Louis Slinger –

a famous late-night dinner dish made of eggs, hash browns, and a meat patty smothered in chili and cheese.

The St. Louis Slinger Dog is an over-the-top breakfast.

The Base: a jumbo, nearly foot-long hot dog served on a fresh bun. The Toppings: it is heavily loaded with crispy hash browns, savory taco meat (or chili), melted nacho cheese,

and two fried eggs on top.

If that’s not enough, you can try the Burnt Ends Hot Dogs – smoked all-beef hot dogs, cut into bite size pieces, glazed with BBQ sauce, and served with a potato salad side.

Or for Ramen aficionados, there is shredded beef tossed in Birria sauce and served over Ramen noodles. Add onions, cilantro, and a lime wedge to make this your own Ramen bowl.

“We couldn’t be more excited about reaching an agreement with Stephen and extending his historic career with the Warriors,” said Warriors General Manager Mike Dunleavy. “Personally, I don’t think there has ever been a better face to a franchise in professional sports history, both on and off the court, than Stephen Curry with the Warriors. Oakland Roots FC

Roots Play to Scoreless Draw on the Road at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC

October 3, 2026

Despite facing heavy pressure for the majority of the match, Oakland remained steadfast on the road Saturday night in Colorado Springs as Roots played Switchbacks FC to a 0-0 draw.

The draw earned a crucial point in the Western Conference table for the 9th place Roots as the opportunities to leap above the 8th place playoff line become fewer as the regular season nears a finish.

For the first third of the contest, the action appeared level as the backlines of both sides did good work in limiting chances from dangerous areas.

But near the 35th minute, Colorado Springs began to tilt the pitch in their favor, finding sustained pressure in Oakland’s defensive third for the rest of the first forty-five.

This pressure continued for the majority of the second half as well, with Roots finally settling back into the game and beginning to find some attacking success of their own around the 80th minute.

Despite the pressure, Roots’ backline paired with yet another stellar match from goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh kept the sheet clean for the third straight match, eventually reaching the final whistle with a point in their pocket, and goose eggs still occupying the scoreboard.

Roots will now head back to the East Bay where they are set to play their final match at the iconic Oakland Coliseum in their final home game of 2026 when they play host to visiting San Antonio FC on Saturday, October 10th at 7 PM PT.

Bay FC

Match Recap:

Bay FC start fast but fall on he road to Kansas City Current

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 3, 2026) – Bay FC fell 5-1 Saturday at the Kansas City Current at CPKC Stadium. A fast start saw forward Karlie Lema put her club ahead in just the fourth minute with her eighth goal on the year, setting a new club record for goals in a single regular season. The match went to the break deadlocked at one goal each before the hosts scored four goals after halftime to earn all three points.

“I thought we did a good job to go 1-0 up,” said Head Coach Emma Coates. “I’m really disappointed in the manner of the goals we conceded. I feel that the break gives us a chance to reflect and make sure that we maximize the last three games.”

Bay FC wasted little time going ahead, taking a 1-0 advantage in just the fourth minute. A heavy touch by forward Racheal Kundananji allowed her to beat a defender and play a perfectly weighted ball to Lema, who took advantage of the goalkeeper coming off her line to slot it past and into the back of the net.

Kansas City put a spell of pressure on Bay FC in the following moments, but the club was able to keep its hosts from making anything out of it. Kansas City forward Haley Hopkins put a half volley from a cross on frame, but didn’t get enough on it to challenge goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz.

The Current leveled the scoreline near the midway point of the first half after a corner kick was served into traffic from the right. A short video review confirmed the goal after multiple players collided as the ball bounced over the line and in, with Hopkins credited with the tally for influencing the final direction of the ball.

Heidi Klum -- from the

Super model Heidi Klum may not be an athlete but she did grace the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit

US Edition twice.

In 2006 Sports Illustrated held a magazine signing tour to promote the annual swimsuit issue by having several of the models tour major cities. I was present at the San Francisco signing. As I approached Heidi at her table she greeted me with her incredible German accent. We chatted for a moment, then she signed my favorite photo from the magazine where she’s only wearing body paint.

Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 204: What The Protect College Sports Act Gives The People Pushing It

by Darren Heitner, Esq.

Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

By now you probably know that the Senate passed the Protect College Sports Act by a vote of 77-22. It's the first time either chamber of Congress has approved comprehensive federal legislation governing college athletics, and Ted Cruz spent the next two days insisting the momentum would carry across the Capitol. He told Ross Dellenger that he has held "extensive conversations" with Speaker Mike Johnson, that he still expects the House to return before the election, and that "the House can pass this in one day." Jake Sherman's reporting says otherwise. House Republican leadership says there is no chance members come back for the bill, that leadership doubts it could even get enough members back, that the bill is not a priority five weeks before an election, and that leadership is not confident it could get through the Rules Committee. The House is not scheduled to return until early November.

The gap gives us some time to ask important questions. Marc Edelman asked some of those questions more directly than anyone this week, urging reporters to stop accepting what the bill's advocates say it does and to start examining the incentives each advocate actually has. It doesn't take a lot of intellect to understand that this bill was never primarily about athletes, Olympic sports, or women's sports, but about a handful of powerful constituencies each walking away with something it wanted, while the athletes who generate the revenue were subordinated.

Edelman started the conversation. Let's use this space to continue it.

Courtois Wins Sixth Consecutive Title at the 2026 World Sailing Women’s Match Racing World Championship

San Francisco Bay may have a reputation as a stern teacher, but skipper Pauline Courtois (FRA) and her Match in Pink by Normandy Elite Team proved to be quick studies at the 2026 World Sailing Women’s Match Racing World Championship (30 September to 4 October), hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club. Courtois and crew Maëlenn Lemaitre, Louise Acker and Laurane Mettraux, representing France’s Club de Voile Saint-Aubin Elbeuf, battled 11 teams across a range of conditions to win a historic sixth consecutive world-championship title. The invitation-only regatta was raced in J/22s and brought 12 of the world’s best all-women match-racing teams together to compete in what proved to be a match-racing masterclass.

Impressively, Courtois and crew won 19 of the 20 matches that they sailed.

"St. Francis Yacht Club would like to congratulate Pauline Courtois and her Match in Pink by Normandy Elite Team on their world-championship title,” said Susan Ruhne, StFYC’s 2026 Commodore. “The Bay delivered varied conditions over four days of racing, and StFYC’s Cityfront racecourse gave spectators the best stadium-style viewing experience possible.”

Santa Clara built a 2-0 first-half lead, opening the scoring on Kennedy Schoennauer's penalty kick in the fourth minute after she was brought down in the box and adding Hildi Benediktsdottir's goal in the 17th minute off assists from Litsy Alcocer and Schoennauer. After the penalty, the Broncos kept pressure on Denver with five shots and three corner kicks by the 15th minute, including Alcocer's shot off the right woodwork.
