Dear Indiana-ACC Colleague,

It is hard to believe that my term as Indiana-ACC president draws to an end at the time of ACC.19 on March 18. It has been an honor to serve you and the Chapter. Donald R. Westerhausen, Jr., MD, FACC, an interventional cardiologist from the Elkhart area, will be our next president and an excellent leader. He has some wonderful ideas that will serve our Chapter well over the next three years.

My work with the Indiana-ACC could not have been accomplished without the hard work and support of our Indiana-ACC Council, CV Team leaders, past presidents, and you, our dedicated members. I want to extend a personal thanks to Gwen Goldfarb, our chapter executive, for her professional expertise and support during my term as president. As anyone close to the operations of the chapter knows well, Gwen is a critical part of our success. Thank you to everyone for giving your time and energy for the Indiana-ACC. It is with the utmost gratitude to all of you that I share some highlights of this past year:
  • Comprehensive focus on advocacy, including a greater presence of Indiana-ACC members at the Indiana Statehouse for our Legislative Day, relationship building through multiple legislative practice visits across the state, and engaging a greater number of our members with advocacy imperatives.
  • Promoted use of the PARTool, with continued efforts to minimize barriers encountered by our physicians and patients in obtaining appropriate care. Indiana-ACC submitted 214 PARTool entries, the most of any state.
  • Continued promotion of ACCPAC membership. The Indiana-ACC ranked 7th nationally in ACCPAC contributions.
  • Hosted practice visits at multiple state sites for national and state legislators and/or their staff. We have challenged each council member to host a practice visit.
  • Targeted growth in the care team membership (17 added in 2018) from 147 to 202 in years spanning 2016-2018.
  • Focus on healthy living through advocacy addressing smoking cessation and healthy food choices.
  • Our 22nd Annual Meeting of the Indiana-ACC was held in October with nearly 100 participants, which provided joint presentations from the entire cardiovascular team, including physicians, CV team members and administrative members. FITs competed in oral and poster presentations. We continue to support and emphasize team-based care.
  • Partner with American Heart Association, Raise It for Health, Indiana State Medical Society (ISMA), and other organizations to align goals regarding professional and practice health in addition to identifying key public health needs.
  • The Indiana-ACC Women in Cardiology held its 2nd annual meeting, which focused on challenges including work-life balance and professional well-being.
  • Focusing on diversity and inclusion issues.

Please continue your involvement, and mark your calendar for our 23rd Annual Meeting on Saturday, October 19, at the Westin Indianapolis.

Indiana-ACC Legislative Day
The Indiana-ACC held an impactful Legislative Day with 23 members on February 6, 2019, at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. We advocated for House Bill 1565 Cigarette Taxes, House Bill 1342 Telephone CPR Instruction Training, and Senate Bill 425 Minimum Age to Purchase Tobacco and e-Liquids (with the removal of the military exemption). Building relationships with state lawmakers helps to ensure that the Indiana Legislature remains informed about issues facing providers and patients.

Cardio-Oncology Case Conference
On February 13, Vijay Rao, MD, PhD, FACC, Indiana-ACC council member, organized a cardio-oncology case conference held at Franciscan Health Indianapolis.

Two challenging cases were presented: one by a Franciscan Family Medicine intern, Hira Naqvi, DO, and one by Franciscan cardiologist and Indiana-ACC member, Ryan Daly, MD, FACC. The cases were presented to a multidisciplinary audience that included cardiologists, oncologists, pharmacists, advance practice providers, and hospital administrators. The conference was also broadcast across the state via WebEx and call in.

"We are excited to increase awareness about one of the fastest growing fields in cardiology and look forward to working with health care teams across the state over the coming years," Dr. Rao commented.

The next case conference is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22, 2019. Mark your calendars!
