Several things I want to talk about this week. Updates first...

We got in Discotek's July slate early, and pre-orders for that stuff completed shipping on Thursday. We got in everyone else's July releases the same day, including Crunchymation's stuff that streets next week. Those pre-orders will complete shipping today so watch your porch or mailbox because there is probably an RACS box of Anime goodness headed your way. :-)

Earlier in the week we got Viz's release of the Chainsaw Man Complete Series BLURAY (Limited Edition), which came in about two weeks early. Pre-orders have been filled. I'm mentioning this one specifically because we really wanted to offer the CSM LE for a lower price and I want to apologize that the price on it is a bit high. Viz is not leaving us ANY margin on their limited releases these days, and even at near MSRP, our margins on this one are in the single digits. I think the studio execs at Viz have decided that they are going to chase the mass market and no longer care if Independent retailers carry their releases. In fact, their pricing now seems to actively discourage it. ~shrugs~

It came to our attention this week that Kitty's recent release of the Kitty's Hot Tub of Delights BLURAY (Adult) was incorrectly labeled as Dub/Sub on the initial information they sent out. The title is actually Japanese Language w/ English subtitles only (the Widow BLURAY (Adult), on the other hand IS Dub/Sub). We have updated the information on the store site and have already messaged everyone who pre-ordered it offering a hassle free return if needed.

While they did not arrive this week as I had hoped, a bunch of Anime Limited titles are now on the way to us. The previously MIA Vlad Love Complete Series BLURAY from May will be here shortly. Also the Pigtails & Other Short Stories Short Film Anthology BLURAY and the Tokyo Marble Chocolate Movie BLURAY are also in route to us, and all three of these should be in stock next week. Finally, we should have the City Hunter: Angel Dust Movie BLURAY in stock by the end of July. So all good news there.

John at Media Blasters told me this week that they have finally decided to repress the Yosuga No Sora and the Rio Rainbow BD. Also, the Juden Chan Recharged BD is back in replication and we should have it back in stock soon. Both Rio and Juden had previously been removed from the RACS store, so we'll be adding those back to the catalog as soon as they are back in stock.

While they have not formally announced it, it looks like AniPlex USA will release Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on BluRay in Region A sometime this fall, possibly as soon as October. We'll post it up for pre-order as soon as set a hard date for it.

And finally, Zucco recently dropped a video discussing manufacturing problems found in a few recently released Anime Figures. If you are a figure collector I encourage you to checkout his video. Good Smile, the manufacturer of some of the figurines effected, has also made a post regarding the problems, and you can find their take on it here.

THE DIAMOND COMICS DEBACLE

While I haven't discussed it much previously, the Diamond Comic Distributors bankruptcy is really starting the wreak havoc on a number of indy comic publishers, and is now bleeding over into the manga industry. In a nutshell, Diamond was at one time the sole distributor for nearly every comic book imprint in the country, and Diamond was the primary, and often the sole wholesale vendor, for most comic shops in the country. When Diamond temporarily shuttered operations during the pandemic that all changed as larger publishers and retailers moved their distribution and sourcing into the book trades, and since then Diamond's business has been steadily, predictably, going south. In January they declared bankruptcy, and fast forward to May, their assets were ultimately acquired by a Canadian company called Ad Populum. That's when things really got bad for indy publishers.

So it turns out, most small publishers had an arrangement with Diamond called 'consignment', which is where a publisher puts their inventory into a distributor's warehouse for free, and only gets paid when the distributor sells a unit of that inventory to a retailer. The distributor, right or wrong, hopefully helps the publisher reach markets they would not have been able to otherwise. This arrangement is interesting because we always had to go up against this sorta monkey business when we used to compete with another big Anime e-tailer. Certain Anime and Manga publishers, who made us pay up front for every tankōbon or bluray disc we put into inventory, would give that e-tailer inventory for free and then get paid only when they sold it. I never really minded this because, unlike them, it forced us to operate in an ultra efficient way and to prioritize excellent service.

But I digress... ;-)

During the Diamond bankruptcy proceedings publishers continued to send inventory to Diamond, and continued to get paid for sold units. But once Ad Populum took over in May, it seems everyone just stopped getting paid. This left a couple hundred indy publishers in the lurch, who soon discovered that it was even worse as Diamond would no longer return consigned inventory to them, apparently claiming it no longer belonged to them due to a contract technicality and Diamond was just going to sell it off and keep the money. Over the past few weeks, a flurry of court actions and lawsuits have been filed over this, and the outcome for these companies is still far from certain. Several publishers are claiming Diamond is holding inventory valued well into seven figures, and one even said last week if they cannot get Diamond to pay for sold inventory, they would not be able to make payroll and might go out of business.

So how does this effect us? Well, there are several Manga labels that have some crossover stake in the comic markets and are taking pretty big hits in all this. Some of the smaller ones, like Udon, Titan, and Ablaze, have been confirmed to have consignment relationships with Diamond. While I don't have specific information from Ablaze, but it's possible the reason many of Ablaze's recently scheduled Manga releases haven't been published yet may be related to all this. We have reached out to everyone that had orders holding for any of those titles (see date changes) and coordinated mods so these releases were no longer holding up anyone's order. Hopefully these books will be released soon.

Don't know how all of this will ultimately play out. Publishers are now organizing in groups to try to get their inventory back, or get Diamond to pay for it. So we'll have to see what happens, but for sure in the short term it's going to be a big distraction for publishers and there are probably going to be more delayed manga releases, especially coming out of the smaller publishing houses.

WHAT'S NEW @ RACS THIS WEEK??

This week we got in about a months worth of new Anime releases! New arrivals in this MEGA update include the standard and limited editions of the Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian Season 1 BLURAY, the standard and limited editions of the Re:Monster The Complete Season BLURAY, the standard and limited editions of the Solo Leveling Season 1 BLURAY/DVD and the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 3 Part 1 BLURAY/DVD all in from Crunchymation.

We also got in the Chainsaw Man Complete Series BLURAY (Limited Edition) from Viz and the Plus-Sized Elf Complete Collection BLURAY arrived from Sentai. AnimEigo's release of the Romeo's Blue Skies BLURAY also arrived on time as promised.

From Discotek we got in the ViVid Strike! Complete TV Series BLURAY, the

Osomatsu-kun Complete 1988 TV Series BLURAY, and the re-releases of the Highlander The Complete Animated Series BLURAY and the DearS Complete Collection BLURAY. They also sent us several new live action titles including the Kamen Rider X Complete TV Series BLURAY (Live Action), the Super Rescue Solbrain Complete TV Series BLURAY (Live Action) and several other new releases.

In addition to new arrivals, we added both Crunchymation's and Sentai's October release slates to the store for pre-order. Check the blog for the entire list. Small note, we did not include the Oct 21st release of the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Part 2 BLURAY/DVD (Limited Edition) on the new list because it was already announced along with September's releases.

IN THE NEWS

The United States will abolish in 2027 duty exemptions on imports below US$800 in value - also known as the de minimis exemption — under a policy bill signed into law earlier this month. Combined with tariffs, the end of the de minimis exemption in two years could discourage U.S. anime fans from spending on cross-border e-commerce purchases for anime merchandise.

Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime fan and industry convention, is weighing a move from downtown Los Angeles after 18 years, says the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, the non-profit group that organizes the event. Why it matters: SPJA estimates that this year’s Anime Expo delivered an economic impact of more than US$110 million to area businesses, which Los Angeles stands to lose if the event moves elsewhere. Turnstile attendance this year was 410,000, inching up 0.7 percent compared to 2024, a sign that the 867,000-square-foot (80,500-square-meter) Los Angeles Convention Center is reaching capacity. In comparison, last year’s turnstile attendance grew 3.8 percent from 2023 levels. SPJA can’t grow Anime Expo without more space at the convention center, and labor expenses and venue costs for the event are also rising.

Webtoon Entertainment reorganized its live-action film and series production unit Wattpad Webtoon Studios with a rebrand into Webtoon Productions and added new executives to oversee IP development.

Tommy Yune, Harmony Gold USA president of animation, told attendees of the Robotech panel at Anime Expo that Harmony Gold USA still has a working relationship with Bigwest, one of the primary Japanese rightsholders of the Macross anime franchise, from which Robotech was adapted. Bigwest representative director Kaya Onishi was also present in the panel room, lending weight to Yune’s statement, though she wasn’t introduced to the audience. “A meeting between Bigwest and Harmony Gold did take place at Anime Expo,” Harmony Gold USA vice president of marketing Kevin McKeever confirmed to Animenomics, but he wouldn’t comment on specific topics discussed. The meeting, likely the first face-to-face meeting between the two companies in years, was made possible because Bigwest made its first Anime Expo appearance this year by working with Los Angeles-based rights management firm SOZO IP to bring Macross programming to the convention. An agreement struck in 2021 ended 20 years of disagreements between Bigwest and Harmony Gold USA on the distribution of Macross and Robotech titles. On the prospects of a Robotech live-action film being developed at Sony Pictures, McKeever told panel attendees, “Movies need a chain of 10,000 people to say yes. Right now, 9,999 people have said yes, and the last person is saying no.”
