Dear Indiana-ACC Colleague,
It's hard to believe that three years serving as Indiana-ACC president have passed so quickly. My term as your chapter President ends at the end of March. I want you to know that it has been a privilege to serve the Indiana-ACC. As Chapter President, I have had the honor of working with cardiovascular practitioners across Indiana. Thank you for collaborating with me as we worked to advance the Indiana-ACC mission: to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health of all Hoosiers. I would like to recognize Emily Keltner, MA, CV Team state representative, for her leadership as my partner. I would not have been able to deliver without the support of the Council, Past-President Raymond Dusman, MD, FACC, and the members who gave their time to the Indiana-ACC. I want to thank Gwen Goldfarb, our chapter executive, who manages our chapter and works hard for our members and the chapter.

Indiana-ACC Annual Meeting: In-person on Sept. 10
Save the date! The Indiana-ACC Annual Meeting will be in person on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Indianapolis Marriott North, 3645 River Crossing Pkwy, Indianapolis, IN 46240. Stay tuned for more details.
State of the State
Advocacy
- The Indiana-ACC took an extremely proactive approach to lobbying the Indiana General Assembly for an increase in the tobacco tax in advance of the 2021 Legislative Session. This involved action alerts to our membership, participating in virtual meetings with key legislators -- including at a Teachers Union’s Third House meeting where legislators and voters communicate in an open forum -- local legislative updates sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and direct meetings with individual legislators. These efforts continued throughout the Legislative Session and were coordinated with other advocacy groups, including the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, and Raise It For Health. While our efforts to increase the tobacco tax were unsuccessful, our state legislators began to recognize the Indiana-ACC and its members for our meaningful healthcare advocacy on behalf of patients.
- Advocacy efforts expanded to support mask and vaccine mandates during special legislative sessions in the summer and winter.
- Testified against legislation (HB 1001) prior to the 2022 legislative session that would discourage local governments, school districts, and private companies from instituting vaccine mandates and passports. Action alert to membership followed.
- Dr. Westerhausen was the recipient of the 2021 ACC Legislative Conference Dee Mooty Grassroots Award for his work to improve public health.

ACC Message of Support For the Ukrainian People
As the fighting in Ukraine intensifies, the ACC is joining its voice with other global cardiovascular societies and humanitarian organizations urging support for all those caught in the escalating crisis.
In the decades since its founding in 1949, the ACC has evolved into a global leader in transforming cardiovascular care and improving heart health. With more than 54,000 members worldwide, of which more than 25% reside outside the U.S., the College has a long history of working with its partner societies and 42 International Chapters to tangibly reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease and accelerate advances in heart care regardless of politics and borders.
“ACC’s leaders and staff express our deepest concerns and support for our members and all those on the ground in Ukraine, as well as those in neighboring countries and throughout the world who are helping to provide support and medical care for the ever-growing number of refugees,” says ACC President Dipti Itchhaporia, MD, FACC. “We thank those who are literally on the front lines and continuing to provide care to patients from bomb shelters and basements. Our collective hope is for a resolution that mitigates any further loss of life.”
The ACC has made a donation to the UN Refugee Agency (USA for UNHCR) to provide much-needed emergency aid to families in Ukraine. Their work to provide “Help, Hope and Home” to refugees worldwide is consistent with what each of our members do each day – help and heal. ACC members seeking to make additional donations can access the UNHCR site, here. The International Committee of the Red Cross is also accepting donations for their on-the-ground efforts in the area.
