The Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve is not just a Josephine County treasure, it is an amazing Oregon story and even a national one.
In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act into law. Three years later, President William Howard Taft used it to designate the Oregon Caves as a National Monument in 1909, one of the earliest in the American West.
Before a road even reached the site in 1927, more than 20,000 visitors made the journey on horseback from Williams to camp and tour the Oregon Caves. Tents gave way to cabins, and in 1934, the Historic Chateau was built, as part of a vision to create a true resort destination nestled in the wilderness of Southern Oregon. The Chateau served visitors for over 84 years. Today, the Chateau is temporarily closed as funding for its full historic restoration comes together.
The story of what it was and what it can be again is well worth exploring -- Watch for more about the Chateau in the upcoming newsletters.
