Do behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia differ between women and men? Researchers analyzed data from 174 people with Alzheimer’s dementia in long-term care and inpatient psychiatry using a clinician-rated symptom tool. They found women had more frequent and severe delusions, while men had more sleep problems, though broader symptom clusters were similar. This study matters because it may support more individualized care. Clinicians, caregivers and dementia researchers will gain insight into sex-specific symptom patterns.

Can hospitals better support people who use substances? Researchers explored the views of 31 health care providers, across three Southwestern Ontario hospitals, through interviews and focus groups. They found gaps in education, resources, policy and culture, with stigma affecting care. The study shows why hospitals need better training and stronger support for harm reduction. Clinicians, leaders and educators will gain practical insight into improving safer, more compassionate care.

Could some people with wet age-related macular degeneration safely go longer between eye injections? Using data from the TENAYA and LUCERNE trials, researchers examined whether patients doing well on faricimab might extend treatment to every 20 weeks. They found that many maintained strong disease control and more than half could potentially have reached that longer interval. Retina specialists, patients and health planners can learn how treatment burden might be reduced without compromising care.

Who is most likely to use virtual HIV care and who may be left behind? Researchers analyzed 2022 data from 1,930 people in Ontario’s HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study and compared virtual, in-person and hybrid care use. They found that use varied by region, gender, education, income, time since diagnosis and depression. This research matters because it highlights equity gaps. Clinicians, policymakers and community organizations will gain insight into making virtual care more accessible.

Why are shoulder injuries so common in firefighters and what helps recovery? Researchers interviewed clinicians who treat firefighters with work-related shoulder disorders to learn what they see in practice. They found that injury risk is shaped by heavy physical demands, slips and falls, training gaps and delayed diagnosis, while recovery benefits from tailored, multimodal rehabilitation. This study is important for safer workplaces. Firefighters, clinicians and occupational health teams will gain ideas for prevention and treatment.

Does hearing ability influence how older adults with mild cognitive impairment respond to dual-task training? Using data from the SYNERGIC trial, a multi-site study testing combined exercise, cognitive, and brain stimulation interventions, researchers examined how hearing affected outcomes. Poorer hearing reduced dual-task improvements. These findings emphasize addressing hearing in interventions. Clinicians and researchers will better understand how sensory health impacts cognitive-motor rehabilitation success.

How can a digital tool help people make informed decisions about COVID-19 vaccination? Via a user-centred design process, researchers built and refined a bilingual online decision aid for people in Canada. Through repeated feedback from citizens, clinicians, designers and experts, they improved clarity, navigation and personalization. The result is a tool designed to support evidence-informed, values-based decisions. Readers interested in public health, digital health and patient education will gain ideas for better decision support.

Can changing the shape of a shoulder implant reduce loosening over time? Researchers used computer models of shoulders with arthritis to compare standard glenoid implants with superiorly augmented designs that correct excessive upward tilt. They found that greater correction improved humeral head positioning and increased compressive forces at the implant-bone interface, which may reduce mechanical risk for loosening. Orthopaedic researchers, surgeons and trainees will gain insight into implant design and surgical planning.
