A Message from the Executive Director

As we move into fall, Chapman School of Seamanship continues to chart an exciting course forward. With our professional classes well underway and a fresh wave of students training for maritime careers, we’re reminded daily of our mission: preparing the next generation of safe, skilled mariners.

This issue celebrates the strong partnerships that help us deliver world-class training, the success of graduates like Jacob Wunsch who are now serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, and our continued commitment to environmental stewardship on the water.

I also had the honor and privilege of swearing in Jameson Kondratowicz into the U.S. Coast Guard this past week. Jameson, a graduate of our Professional Mariner Program, proudly took advantage of our lateral entry program, following in the footsteps of other Chapman alumni who have chosen service as their calling.

Thank you for being part of the Chapman community - your support makes all this possible.

Warm Regards,

Jim Allen

Executive Director

A Message From The Director of Development

Did You Know Not All Nonprofits Are Alike?

At the Chapman School of Seamanship, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and stewardship, and we are proud to be recognized with the Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid Guidestar--the highest honor awarded for responsible governance and measurable impact.

We are also pleased to announce that our Impact Report is now available by clicking the link above. This report highlights how your support translates into real outcomes for our students, our programs, and our community.

If you are considering a donation, I encourage you to read through the report and reach out with any questions. And remember — one of the easiest ways to sustain our mission year-round is by joining the Chapman Burgee Society, our monthly giving club that helps provide scholarships, maintain our fleet, and keep programs strong.

Chapman Staff Profile: Matt McKenzie

Senior Navigation & Seamanship Instructor

This month, we’re proud to highlight Matt McKenzie, our Senior Navigation & Seamanship Instructor. Matt brings years of professional maritime experience and a passion for teaching to every classroom session.

Born in Coventry, Rhode Island, Matt moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at the age of 12. Right out of high school, at just 18 years old, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, beginning a career of distinguished service.

His assignments included:

  • Station Cape May, NJ
  • USCGC Galatian, Charleston, SC
  • Station Point Judith, RI
  • USCGC Margaret Norvell, Miami, FL
  • Station Panama City, FL
  • And finally returning to where it all began — Station Cape May, NJ

Matt retired from the Coast Guard in October 2022 after a career marked by dedication, seamanship, and service. In 2023, he joined Chapman School as our Senior Navigation & Seamanship Instructor.

In the classroom, Matt has a gift for making complex navigation and piloting concepts approachable and practical for students at all levels. His patient teaching style, deep subject knowledge, and real-world insights make him a trusted mentor for aspiring mariners.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys hiking with his dog, Boss, and is a lifelong Boston sports fan, cheering on all the teams from his home state.

Student Spotlight: Jacob Wunsch

This month, we are proud to highlight Jacob Wunsch, a Martin County native whose path to service began right here in Stuart, Florida. Jacob attended Citrus Grove Elementary in Palm City and later graduated from South Fork High School, where he was an active member of the ROTC program.

His passion for the water started early, strengthened through multiple summer camps at Chapman School of Seamanship, where he developed the skills and confidence that would guide his career.

On March 18, Jacob reported to U.S. Coast Guard boot camp, graduating as an E-4 Boatswain’s Mate Third Class (BM3). Thanks to Chapman’s lateral entry pathway, he was able to enlist at an advanced rate, already well-prepared for service.

Jacob’s first duty station is aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Kimball in Hawaii — his top-choice assignment. There, he serves in critical roles supporting navigation, seamanship, and operations.

Outside of duty, Jacob enjoys fishing and playing video games, staying connected to the coastal lifestyle that inspired his journey.

Congratulations, Jacob — we are proud to see a Chapman alumnus representing both our school and our community with distinction in the United States Coast Guard.

Tech Tips from Yamaha Master Technician Shane Bowlin

Boat Trailer Maintenance: Don't Let Trouble Start on Land

A well-maintained trailer is just as important as the boat it carries. Neglecting trailer upkeep can lead to breakdowns, unsafe towing, or even accidents.

Shane’s Quick Checklist:

  • Tires: Check pressure before every trip and inspect for cracks or uneven wear.
  • Bearings: Grease wheel bearings regularly to avoid overheating and failure.
  • Brakes: If your trailer is equipped with brakes, flush with fresh water after use, and inspect pads for wear.
  • Lights & Wiring: Test all lights before hitting the road; repair any corroded or frayed connections.
  • Winch & Straps: Make sure your winch, bow stop, and tie-down straps are in good working order.

Pro Tip: Keep a basic roadside kit with spare bearings, a hub, tire, and tools in your tow vehicle. A little preparation can save a ruined trip.

Safe Boating Tip:

Reduce Plastic Waste on the Water

Plastic bottles, bait packaging, ice bags, and other disposable plastics may seem harmless aboard, but they pose a serious hazard to our environment when they blow overboard or are washed into the sea. Marine debris can injure wildlife, damage ecosystems, and spoil our waterways.

Better Options:

  • Carry reusable metal or glass water bottles
  • Store snacks in reusable containers instead of single-use plastic bags
  • Secure ice bags, bait packaging, soda bottles, and water bottles after filling your cooler so they don’t blow away
  • Recycle whenever possible when ashore

Did you know? Each year, it’s estimated that over 14 million tons of plastic enter the ocean, with single-use items like bottles and packaging making up the majority of marine debris.

Small changes make a big impact. Together, we can protect the waters we all enjoy.
