Abstract Submission Opens March 2, 2026 NEWSLETTER | | Happy New Year Vet Diagnosticians! | | |
Thank you for being a part of AAVLD. This organization is dedicated to advancing veterinary diagnostic laboratory science. Each member of AAVLD, and each employee in our accredited laboratories play a vital role. Quality test results are only assured when everyone is doing their job with excellence. Your work ensures animal health and helps to feed our nation and the world…thank you again for your service.
I wish all diagnosticians an excellent 2026. Please mark your calendars now for our next annual meeting in beautiful, interesting Madison, Wisconsin, October 15 – 21st. We have never held an annual meeting in Madison, and everyone claims that Madison is a FUN city to experience. It is time to start thinking about your next scientific meeting presentation! Our meetings thrive on innovative diagnostic presentations by student trainees, professional staff, and diagnostic scientists. If you have not presented in a while at the annual meeting… make this the year to share your experiences and expertise with your colleagues.
I am also pleased to introduce you to the 2026 Executive Board members and officers (see next section). We have a talented team of leaders… and what will make them even better leaders is your direct input via committee work. So please get engaged this year and work with your fellow diagnosticians to advance our discipline. Thank you for all you will do this year!
Sincerely,
David H. Zeman, DVM, PhD, DACVP

Dear Vet Lab Directors,
The AAVLD, together with the VA/MD CVM Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine (CPCVM) are preparing to offer experiential opportunities for veterinarians from which they will learn about activities and career opportunities in the veterinary diagnostic field. This experiential opportunity will take place over a period of 1 to 4 weeks, and veterinarians will have the opportunity to meet with multiple diagnosticians and staff at their respective veterinary diagnostic laboratories to better understand the roles of laboratory diagnostic veterinarians and explore the various career paths available. The experiences will happen at participating accredited veterinary diagnostic labs across the nation. Diagnostic lab directors and section leaders can learn more by contacting Dr. Cassidy Rist, Director, CPCVM: crist6@vt.edu, and by reading the attached agreement.
Our next task is develop a list of voluntary participating labs. Laboratories that are ready to join a list of mentor labs should contact Dr. David Zeman: dzeman@aavld.org. The opportunity to sign up as a participating mentor laboratory will remain open, but we hope to advertise the list of participating labs in the January AAVLD Newsletter, so if possible, please express your lab’s willingness to participate by early January. I am sure you can all see the potential to recruit future DVM diagnosticians by this program, thus fulfilling some of our lab workforce development goals. T

Histopathology of nosemosis in honey bees: correlation with manual counting and comparison of staining methods, Elsa Racine, Magaly Bégin-Pépin, Marie-Odile Benoit-Biancamano
Abstract. Nosemosis, caused by Vairimorpha (Nosema) ceranae or V. (Nosema) apis, is the main fungal disease affecting the Western honey bee (Apis mellifera). We evaluated the use of histology in the diagnosis of disease, identified the histologic patterns, and compared the efficacy of different staining techniques. We sampled 10 hives, collecting ~80 bees per hive. Spore counts were performed on 60 bees per sample using a hemocytometer in accordance with the standard procedure. Slides of whole bees were produced from the remaining bees, stained with 15 different techniques, and observed under a light microscope at 400×. Infection in the ventriculus was graded using hematoxylin–phloxine–saffron stain; prevalence and severity of the infection were determined; and an intra-class coefficient (ICC) was calculated to correlate the histologic results with the standard counting method. Based on contrast, specificity, and sensitivity, we found hot Gram chromotrope and Ziehl–Neelsen stains offered the best approach for highlighting Vairimorpha spores. These stains were optimized to find the ideal staining times for Vairimorpha by testing different immersion durations in key steps to enhance spore contrast. More

| JVDI call for submissions on Influenza A virus (2026.01.05) | | |
Influenza A viruses affect a wide range of domestic animals, laboratory species, and wildlife, and they continue to pose a frequent diagnostic and surveillance challenge for veterinary laboratories worldwide. In domestic animals, including poultry, swine, cattle, horses, and companion animals, influenza A viral infections can result in respiratory disease, decreased productivity, reproductive losses, and, in some species, severe systemic illness or high mortality. Laboratory animals are also susceptible to certain influenza A subtypes, which is relevant both for animal health and for their role as experimental models in pathogenesis, transmission, and vaccine studies. In wildlife, particularly avian species and selected mammals, influenza A viruses circulate endemically and periodically emerge or re-emerge, contributing to spillover events, population-level impacts, and significant public and animal health concerns. The broad host range, genetic diversity, and capacity for interspecies transmission make influenza A viruses a critical focus for diagnostic vigilance, epidemiologic investigation, and One Health–oriented disease monitoring across domestic, laboratory, and wild animal populations.
We are inviting submissions to a JVDI special section on Influenza A virus to be guest edited by Drs. Leyi Wang, University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine; Melissa Macias-Rioseco CAHFS, University of California–Davis. JVDI readers would be interested in background review material and current laboratory investigations, including both successes and failures, or lessons learned.
If you are interested, please submit an abstract of up to 250 words describing your proposed topic by April 30th, 2026. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified of acceptance by May 29th, 2026, and full submissions will be expected by October 31, 2026. Submitted manuscripts will undergo the usual JVDI peer-review process, with publication anticipated in Spring 2027. Page charges of $75/printed page will apply—there are no color page charges for online-only publication.
Please submit your abstract to guest editors Dr. Leyi Wang, leyiwang@illinois.edu
or Dr. Melissa Macias-Rioseco, mmaciasrioseco@ucdavis.eduYour copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
