Make New Habits Easier: Try the Two-Minute Rule

When a new habit starts to feel overwhelming, make it smaller. In Atomic Habits, James Clear introduces The Two-Minute Rule: “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two minutes to do.”

Big goals are important, but breaking them into tiny, manageable steps can make them easier to start—and easier to stick with. The idea is to build the habit first, then gradually build up to the bigger goal.

Want to try it?

Read more: Instead of, “I need to read for 30 minutes every night,” start with one page.

Move more: Instead of, “I need to work out every day,” start with standing up and stretching or doing a short exercise.

Practice mindfulness: Instead of, “I need to meditate for 20 minutes,” start with three mindful breaths.

And if two minutes feels too easy—or even a little silly—try making yourself stop after two minutes. You may be surprised to find that once you start, you want to keep going.

Remember: Two minutes is better than zero. Small steps still move you in the right direction.

Is it Really on

the Bookmobile?

See “Troy Bookmobile” in the catalog? That doesn’t always mean the item is currently on the Bookmobile! Our Bookmobile holds about 1,700 items, while the rest of the Outreach collection is housed at the library.

Want us to bring it to your next stop?

At the library? Ask the front desk for help; they'll check the collection to confirm availability.

Want it delivered to a Bookmobile stop? Call 937-571-2631 or email ssimon@tmcpl.org with the title and your preferred stop.

Troy Bookmobile - On the Road!

Look for the Troy Bookmobile in your neighborhood this summer! Filled with books, audiobooks, magazines, and more, the bookmobile travels around Miami County, making it easy to browse, borrow, and return items close to home. Library staff on board can help with library cards, recommendations, and more.

Catalog Update in Progress

Troy-Miami County Public Library is transitioning to a new library system this fall. This change gives you access to library materials from across Ohio, reduces costs, and provides greater local control of our services. Thank you for your patience and support during this transition. We will be sharing more information as we progress.

What you need to know:

  • All patrons will need a Troy-Miami County Public Library Card to borrow and place holds on TMCPL materials and access all library resources, including the Maker Lab, before our new system launches this fall.

  • Only items in our collection are currently listed in the catalog and available for checkout. Dayton Metro and Bradford items are excluded for now, but they will be available again in SearchOhio after the transition to our new system. This means no interlibrary loans from outside our branches until November.

  • Libby will remain accessible through the changes. Try the app on your favorite device for eBooks, audiobooks, Magazines, and more.

  • We have access to the SEO Library Consortium now! Our staff is happy to help you use this new resource at the desk.

  • In November, our new and improved catalog will be available! (We will be closed for a couple of days in early November due to the transition - more information will be provided.)

Discover More at the Maker Lab!

The Troy-Miami County Public Library Maker Lab is your community space to explore, create, and innovate. Open to all ages and skill levels — come tinker, learn, and make something amazing!

To help you get the most out of your Maker Lab experience, we encourage you to explore our self-guided training resources and reserve equipment on our website.
