George Brown College’s Limberlost Place a smart building in every sense of the word
Limberlost Place, George Brown College’s 10-storey mass timber building at its Toronto waterfront campus, is not spare of innovation.
When the 182,000-square-foot home to architectural students and others opens next year it will be Ontario’s first institutional building in mass timber with a net-zero emissions rating.

Construction employment rebounds in August
A 34,000 position jump in construction helped Canadian employment figures rise by 40,000 workers in August. The 0.2 per cent increase in employment reported in Statistics Canada’s latest Labour Force Survey was outpaced by 0.3 per cent growth in population, however, which resulted in a marginal 0.1 percentage slip to 61.9 per cent in the employment rate — the proportion of the population aged 15 and older who are employed.

Milestone Environmental Contracting Awarded Stage 3 Contract for Randle Reef Remediation Project
Milestone Environmental Contracting in collaboration with the Mississaugas of the Credit Business Corporation, has been awarded a $29.2-million contract for Stage 3 of the Randle Reef Contaminated Sediment Remediation Project. Randle Reef, in Hamilton Harbour on Lake Ontario, was once the largest contaminated sediment site on the Canadian side of the Great Lakes. With an overall investment exceeding $150 million, this project is a joint initiative of the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, the City of Hamilton, the Region of Halton, the City of Burlington, the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority, and Stelco.

SNC-Lavalin changing its name to AtkinsRealis in effort to shed parts of its past
SNC-Lavalin says it is changing its name to AtkinsRealis in a rebranding move after a tumultuous decade for the engineering giant.
In an interview, CEO Ian Edwards said the company wants a makeover following 11 years marked by scandals, trouble with the law and sometimes lacklustre earnings.
The new moniker comes as SNC looks to leave behind the Libya corruption scandal that tarnished its reputation and ensnared the highest office of the Canadian government and to shed the costly backlog of big, over-budget rail contracts that has plagued it for years.

Centennial College opens Canada’s first LEED Gold, zero carbon, mass timber, higher-education building
Centennial College is opening the doors to its trailblazing A-Building ─ Canada’s first LEED Gold, zero carbon, mass timber, higher-education building. A-Building, formerly known as A-Block, establishes a new gateway to Centennial’s flagship Progress Campus in Scarborough that supports Indigenous ways of being and teaching.
An Indigenous Working Group made vital contributions to Indigenous elements of the build as the College worked with Colliers Project Leaders, EllisDon Construction, DIALOG and Smoke Architecture to deliver the approximately $112-million project.

Transformational mixed-use development unveiled in GTA
CentreCourt Developments (CentreCourt) has revealed plans for a 22.3 ha (55-acre) development in Pickering, Ont., bringing additional residential, retail, and public spaces to the revamped Pickering Town Centre.
Pickering City Centre will be a new mixed-use community located directly off Highway 401, at the epicentre of Pickering’s emerging downtown core. Recognizing the immense potential of the site, CentreCourt secured the existing Pickering Town Centre Mall and surrounding lands in early 2023 and plans to develop an integrated masterplan community.
