New Study Confirms the Many Positive Benefits of Participation in the LoveYourBrain Yoga Series
A recent study conducted on the LoveYourBrain Yoga Series confirms the many positive benefits that traumatic brain injury survivors and caregivers gain through participation in the program.
The recent study included 1,563 participants, including individuals from the Lansing area. Eligible participants included traumatic brain injury survivors and caregivers, ages 15-17, ambulatory, and capable of gentle exercise and group discussion.
The study found significant improvements in resilience, positive affect and well-being, and cognition among the participants. The study concluded that LoveYourBrain is feasible and acceptable and may be an effective mode of community-based rehabilitation for brain injury survivors and caregivers.
Professional snowboarder and Olympian, Kevin Pearce, who suffered a nearly fatal brain injury while training for the 2010 winter Olympics, started LoveYourBrain Yoga. LoveYourBrain’s mission is to improve the quality of life of people affected by traumatic brain injury through programs that build community and foster resilience. LoveYourBrain improve lives, creates community, and optimizes the health of everyone they reach through yoga, meditation, and mindfulness programs.
Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center was the first LoveYourBrain Clinical Affiliate in the nation. Qualified Physician Reviewers Needed
MPRO (Michigan Peer Review Organization) is the federally-designated health care Quality Improvement Organization in Michigan. In addition to its long-standing contracts with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Michigan Medicaid program, MPRO also holds contracts with various entities for independent medical reviews.
MPRO’s physician review panel currently consists of approximately 150 specialists and 40 additional physicians in various healthcare fields.
Panel members review cases where there is a concern regarding:
- Quality of care
- Medical necessity for a device, drug, procedure or test; or
- Necessity for hospital admission
Reviews can be completed electronically off-site. Compensation is currently $100 an hour, but the true value is the satisfaction physicians receive in protecting the integrity of their specialty by doing medically legitimate peer review.
If you are interested in serving on MPRO’s physician review panel, please contact James Mitchiner, MD, MPH, MPRO medical director, at (248) 465-7313 or

Michigan Rural Care Threatened by Budget Vetoes
In Lansing, budget negotiations continue after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer line-item vetoed funding passed by the Michigan Senate and House that would take key strides in protecting and improving access and quality of care for Michigan residents. The budget passed by the Legislature would create a more sustainable, long-term funding environment for hospitals by ensuring Medicaid reimbursements are closer to the cost of providing care and protecting vital safety net services and care in Michigan’s most remote areas.
We need your help as we work with lawmakers to work toward a solution that would allow hospitals to be reimbursed by Medicaid for services at a rate closer to the full cost of care, fully funds the Healthy Michigan Plan and maintains support for the Rural Access Pool and Obstetrics Stabilization Fund. This would create a more sustainable, long-term funding environment for hospitals and also protect vital safety net services and care in Michigan’s most remote areas.
What you can do:
Please take a moment to write
your lawmaker
and
the governor
and ask them to support improving healthcare funding as they continue budget negotiations so that every community in Michigan can continue to access the healthcare services they need.
Also, ICYMI:
Check out the hospitals featured in the #MiRuralCareMatters campaign. The #MiRuralCareMatters campaign,
launched earlier this year
, highlights the more than 60 hospitals that serve thousands of Michiganders in rural areas who have unique health needs and challenges. The public education campaign aims to raise awareness of the impact Michigan’s rural hospitals have on the communities they serve and the challenges they face. The campaign has featured:
Thank you again for being a MiCare Champion and showing to lawmakers that #MiCareMatters!

RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT 1 IN 20 U.S. ADULTS HAVE A MISDIAGNOSIS
EVERY YEAR.
Diagnostic Errors: How to Help Write a New Chapter in Patient Safety Improvement will examine foundational concepts to understand diagnostic errors, their contributing factors, and how to measure and address diagnostic missed opportunities in current electronic health record (EHR)-enabled healthcare settings. It will also suggest potential solutions, including closing the loop on the follow-up of abnormal diagnostic test results, and provide action-oriented recommendations to support improvements to reduce patient harm.
UPON COMPLETION, PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
- Create a shared mental model of what is diagnostic error and how it can be addressed
- Identify opportunities for improvement in current practice that address high-risk areas
- Apply knowledge and best practices to reduce harm from diagnostic errors
PRESENTER:
Hardeep Singh, MD, MPH, leads a portfolio of patient safety research in improving the use of health information technology and reducing diagnostic errors. His research has informed several national and international patient safety initiatives and policy reports, including those by the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the IOM), US Department of Health and Human Services, National Quality Forum, American Medical Association, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, OECD, and the WHO. He has received several prestigious awards for pioneering work in the field, including the AcademyHealth Alice S. The 15 most in-demand specialties in 2019 and their base salaries, according to physician recruiters
Recruiters are looking for physicians in 15 specialties. Is yours among the most wanted?
|
Family physicians are the most sought-after specialists by employers using physician recruiters in 2019, noted Merritt Hawkins, a physician staffing agency, in a recent
report
on physician recruiting.
To prepare the report, Merritt Hawkins examined data from over 3,100 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search assignments at Merritt Hawkins and its sister staffing agencies, Kendal & Davis and Staff Care.
This is 13th consecutive year that family physicians were the most requested by employers. It is also the fourth year running that psychiatry landed in the No. 2 slot.
Shift to value-based compensation
Among the other trends noted in the report is an increase in employers shifting toward a quality/value-based physician compensation model. In 2019, 56% of physician production bonus formulas feature quality-based metrics, up from 42% in 2018.
