Dear People of Ascension,

In this season of remembering the saints and looking towards the beginning of Advent, when it’s traditional to ponder “last things”, I write to remind you about Ascension’s columbarium. If you or a family member are looking for a resting place for ashes after cremation, this space could be a wonderful option.

As you probably know, the Columbarium has been open for a number of years, and the prices will go up at the beginning of 2027. You can still purchase a niche or vault at the original price (lower for parishioners) for the rest of this year. Further information is available here. Our Parish Administrator, Brother Andrew Jones, (apjones@ascensionnyc.org or 212-254-8620), will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Making end of life arrangements can be difficult yet also may bring peace and comfort, both to you and those who love you, to know those plans are in place. I am happy to talk with you about these decisions if it would be helpful.

Having had the privilege of inurning the remains of both parishioners and neighbors in our columbarium, I am struck by what a blessing it is to be able to offer this beautiful, dignified space. It helps us Ascensionites to imagine still being part of this sacred space and community, and it is a comfort to those who mourn to be able to visit, pray and remember.

“My heart therefore is glad… and my body also shall rest in hope.”

Blessings,

Liz

Do you like to color? Especially for children and their families- we have copies of “the Sunday Paper” a cartoon version of our gospel each Sunday, along with crayons and clipboards available from the ushers. Please ask for one if your child would enjoy this during the service.

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

This Sunday’s Forum, November 8: Being Human in the Age of AI. This will be the final forum on Artificial intelligence (AI), led by Clay Williams.

Clay Williams has a PhD in computer science and an MA in theology. His doctoral work used AI in computational models of the immune system. Clay brings these interests together to offer insights into how AI works, contrast AI with human thinking, and help spiritual communities reflect theologically on the place of AI in our world.

Gracious God, we give thanks for military men and women, both from the past and present, and for their courageous service and sacrifice to our country and its people to secure the blessings of life, liberty, and justice for all. May our remembrance be a timely reminder that our freedom was purchased at high cost, and should not be taken for granted. Give us resolve to labor in faithful service to you until all share the benefits of freedom, justice, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Immigration Legal Support Fund – Recently our diocese announced a new Immigration Legal Support Fund to support immigrant families in our congregations and neighborhoods throughout the Diocese of New York. The Legal Fund will help those navigating immigration under urgent and vulnerable circumstances to access legal resources. We're starting with a $50,000 contribution from the Bishop’s discretionary funds. Help us to match this amount to keep families together. With your support, we can do more so that no one faces the system alone. Your contribution makes possible same-day response, family preparedness, limited-scope appearances, and urgent filings. You can contribute here. To learn more about the Immigration Legal Support Fund Click here.
