STORIES PAST AND PRESENT
FROM OUR NORTHERN NEW JERSEY REGION ARCHIVES
This month’s story is from the NNJR Pole Position dated September 1987, author unknown titled ‘Special Report, The First Annual Meadowland Cookie Bake-off.’
Let’s have some fun!
“It was on a rainy Friday morning, for all who signed up at Registration at the Meadowlands that had the opportunity to cast a vote for the ‘Best NNJR Cookie.’ Ballot slips were provided to each voter as they sampled the two varieties of chocolate cookies. Of course, they were not told who the bakers were to ensure that an honest vote was cast.
The votes were then submitted to the Registrar who, under careful scrutiny, counted the ballots. At the worker’s party on Friday evening, it was announced who was the lucky winner. Cookie A was chosen as Number One (baked by Steve Orofino) over Cookie B, (baked by Hank Graham) by a narrow margin of 3 votes.
After the first place ribbon was awarded, a protest was submitted to the Registrar by Hank Graham, stating that Steve’s cookie was illegal. It had too many ‘lumps.’
Well, it has taken all this time to consider the protest and the officials are denying Hank’s appeal and the officials are retaining Hank’s protest fee of another batch of chocolate cookies.
Steve will be defending his ‘Cookie’ title at next year’s race, and he is now awaiting a challenger.”
