Legends of LIC - 'Battle-Axe' Gleason

By Bob Singleton, Executive Director, Greater Astoria Historical Society

"Everyone who lives in Long Island City sooner or later becomes familiar with its last mayor, Patrick Jerome 'Battle Axe' Gleason whose profound influence on our community can be found to this day – if you know where to look!

When he arrived in the early 1870s, he secured a contract to build the first trolley which ran along Borden Avenue connecting the Hunters Point Ferry to Calvary Cemetery." Read more here

LIC Flooding Resources

Was your business or property damaged from the last storm on September 29? Please let us know by filling out our form here: https://wkf.ms/3PAnIBK

The best practice after a storm is to ACT FAST and follow the steps below:

  • Take photos of all water damage and document everything.
  • File a claim with the New York City Comptroller.
  • Contact 311 if the catch basins on your block are clogged or haven't been cleaned prior to the storm.
  • Report damage to your business via the NYC Housing Recovery site.
  • Call your insurance broker/agent and have a conversation about whether it makes sense to file a claim. Ask if you're covered for sewer and drain backups.
  • Contact NYS Department of Financial Services. File a complaint/dispute if your damage insurance claim has been denied and you feel it’s incorrect.
  • Check your lease to see if your landlord has any obligations related to your situation. Also, check the casualty clause to see if the flood allows for an abatement period.
  • Contact The Legal Aid Society for help with understanding or dealing with lease issues.
  • Visit the SBS Emergency Response site to apply for assistance.

Small Business Services Emergency Response Unit

The NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) can help local businesses impacted by emergencies. The SBS team works closely with NYC Emergency Management and other key New York City agencies to restore business operations as soon as possible. Take advantage of free resources through the SBS Hotline at 888-SBS-4NYC (888-727-4692) or via email at eru@sbs.nyc.gov.

NYC Funds Funder

SBS has partnered with Next Street to make affordable financing more accessible to all NYC entrepreneurs, including women and minority-owned businesses.
