The Maintenance Department Would Welcome Volunteers!
Imagine prepping and maintaining over 30 buildings; monitoring water, propane, and wastewater systems; managing 10 acres of a waterfront site and 180 acres of wetlands, woodlands, including five trail systems; and ensuring that every guest has a safe, comfortable, and ultimately, a memorable visit!

That is the life of our Maintenance Team – Mike and Jeremy!

They could certainly use some helping hands, especially in the run up to Summer Camp, during Summer Camp, and into the fall when Outdoor Education takes over.

Do you have the interest and skills that can help?! Would you be able to donate your time and talents to assist the Team?!

If you can volunteer, please reach out to Susan (sramey@campkawartha.ca) to find out more!
'Adopt a Cabin' and Help Support Our Infrastructure
By adopting a cabin, you’ll help to tend and care for the many special places that hold so many memories for so many campers. Your donation will help with the upkeep of our cabins - enabling us to refinish floors, repair roofs, paint and refreshen our facilities.

If you are attached to a certain cabin because you stayed there, or if you just want to help because you believe in the value of a camp experience, know that your donation will revitalize a space that will bring joy, delight, and fellowship to many campers for years to come. Learn More.
Ontario Clean Water Agency Hosts a Golf Tournament
The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) has chosen Camp Kawartha as their charity of choice and the beneficiary of their 2023 golf tournament!

The OCWA works with municipalities, businesses, governments, and First Nations to provide solutions to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective clean water services. A Crown Agency of the Province of Ontario, their team can help with everything from operations and maintenance to asset management and utility management services.

The proceeds of their 2023 golf tournament will help us upgrade portions of our water system. Learn More.
Priority School Students Need a Helping Hand
Camp Kawartha recognizes that schools with a lower socio-economic status includes families whose incomes, for a wide variety of reasons, make a visit to the Camp challenging…actually, a better word is impossible. Although we work hard to keep our Outdoor Education prices accessible, for some school families, those fees are still too prohibitive.

We have in place a Subsidy Fund (supported by many of our donors – thank you to them!) that we can dip into to help parents cover some, or in some cases, all the fees. This lifeline means that individual students, and sometimes whole classes, can attend without families having to choose between an enriching class trip with peers or basic home necessities.

Many of these students do not have the necessary sleeping bags and blankets to stay overnight! Their families are cobbling together a mishmash of bedding in hopes that their child will be warm enough in their cabins at night.
A visiting teacher suggested that we reach out to our community to see if we could get some clean sleeping bags and clean blankets that we can store here to share with these families when needed.

A teacher from our subsidized school shared that:

As Teachers we saw such positive growth in our students over the 3 days we were here. I have been their teacher for 8 months, but I have seen the most positive personal development, new friendships and kids coming out of their shells this week than ever before. Students were engaged in programming and to experience so many new things. One student said “this is the best school day ever!”

If you have clean sleeping bags in working order, or clean blankets that you are not using, please consider donating them so they can be share.
Reach out to Jacob (jrodenburg@campkawartha.ca) or Susan (sramey@campkawartha.ca) if you would like to donate to our Bedding Inventory! (Thanks, but no pillows, please.)
We Do Docks (Formerly Armstrong Property Maintenance) is back to help again this year!
Last spring, we were approached by John Armstrong, and he presented us with a unique and generous offer. He proposed that a portion of dock sales throughout 2022 would support the equipment needs of our waterfront.
John is renewing his offer for 2023! So, if you need a dock, reach out to John at wedodocks@hotmail.com and know that by engaging We Do Docks you are also supporting Camp Kawartha. Maybe we can purchase some new life jackets, or tripping canoes, paddles, or safety kits. New waterfront gear is always welcome!

Thank you, John, for your generous spirit!

Girl Guides Made Us a 'Preferred Vendor'!
Girl Guides have been a fixture in Canada since 1910 and their long history of engaging girls in innovative programming is helping build the female leaders of today and tomorrow.

Camp Kawartha regularly welcomes Guides, Embers (formerly Brownies) and Sparks for day and overnight trips.

We are gratified to acknowledge that we are now designated by GGC as a ‘Preferred Vendor’!
“We had an amazing adventure at Camp Kawartha this weekend! The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming, and so knowledgeable. The food was delicious and plentiful, and the kitchen staff were so accommodating. Thank you for a fun camp that pushed us to step out of our comfort zones!”

CAMP KAWARTHA ... IN A NUTSHELL
There is a lot that goes on at Camp Kawartha. Over the coming months, we thought we take this opportunity to share all the things we do year-round that support our mission as a not-for-profit, charitable organization:

Camp Kawartha inspires environmental leaders and stewards of all ages through dynamic, accessible, year-round outdoor programming and powerful partnerships to create meaningful change.
You likely know that we have a vibrant Summer Camp program that has been in operation for more than 100 years (established in 1921). From Kindercamp and day camp to overnight camp, from leadership sessions to tripping in the wilderness, we foster kids who care for each other and for the natural environment.

What you may not know is that we offer outreach camps on Juniper Island in nearby Stoney Lake and day camps at our Environment Centre (one of Canada’s most sustainable buildings) located right next to Trent University. In total, more than 1,200 kids attend our summer camp programming.

In our next newsletter, we’ll tell you more about our unique Environment Centre in partnership with Trent University and how we are helping to create a culture of stewardship in our community and beyond throughout the year.
Stay tuned!
NATURE NOTES
Nature Showcase - Groundwater
Now that spring has sprung and the melt is on, it got us thinking about where that water goes. Of course, there is evaporation, and the runoff into creeks, rivers, and lakes, but that’s the surface water. What about underground?

Some of the rain and snow we receive each year will end up as groundwater and groundwater is pretty much everywhere. It fills the spaces between rock and soil and, if given the perfect conditions, can form underground reservoirs or aquifers.

And it flows! In some areas it may move several metres in a day, but in other places, it may move only a few centimetres in 100 years! Materials such as clay and shale which are dense make movement slow while more porous material like sand or gavel allow for quicker movement. Continue Reading.
