Next ONE WILPF Call--Thursday, April 11
4pm Pacific, 5pm Mountain, 6pm Central, 7pm Eastern
Earth Day, The Green New Deal, & Reports from Venezuela
The Green New Deal
is very much in the news and is an appropriate initiative to move forward for Earth Day this year.
On our ONE WILPF Call on Thursday, April 11, we'll hear from the person who popularized the GREEN NEW DEAL in 2010, Howie Hawkins. Howie was the Green Party Gubernatorial candidate for the state of New York in 2010 running against Andrew Cuomo.
In addition we'll also hear a report back from the WILPF US President, Darien De Lu, about her recent fact-finding trip to Venezuela.
Branches will have the opportunity to report on their World Water Day and Anti-NATO Actions in March and early April.
- Who did you ally with?
- What new components did you incorporate into your event?
- Did you use any of the PRE-PROMOTION tactics we talked about via LAYERING in our March call?
- Did you wear your WILPF US Sashes?
Agenda will include:
- Announcements from WILPF US
- Darien's observations from Caracas traveling with a strong coalition of peace organizations and allies.
- A report on our delegation to strategize with two other women's peace groups.
- You'll also find resources to help you stay on top of the emerging news around US plans for incursions into Venezuela and news from the people of Venezuela themselves.
Who is Howie Hawkins?
Hawkins was
New York's Green Party
candidate for the
U.S. Senate
in 2006. In 2010, Hawkins ran as the Green Party's candidate for
Governor of New York
against Andrew Cuomo and restored ballot status for the party by receiving more than the necessary 50,000 votes. In 2014, Hawkins ran again for
campaign for Governor of New York
, receiving nearly five percent of the vote and keeping the Green Party on the ballot for NY State for the next 5 years. Hawkins ran for Governor of New York in 2018 as well. Hawkins is a good example of the benefits of continuing to push for a 3rd party state level candidate as a way of creating a broader choice in the future.
