We
learned this week
that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will invest $285 million into its Toledo area plants, including $160 million in the Toledo Assembly Complex’s North Plant where the versatile Jeep Wrangler JL is being produced. Most of that investment will go toward equipment and training to build the brand new electric plug-in hybrid Wrangler, which will launch in 2020.
This is again great economic development and jobs news for our city. It shows that Fiat Chrysler is a company that is always investing in the Toledo plant with an eye toward the future. It is devoted to Toledo.
The company would not be making this impressive and futuristic investment unless it was committed long-term to our city.
Fiat Chrysler's announcement this week is the latest in a series of good job-creation news for the city. Since 2015, Site Selection Magazine has consistently ranked Toledo as a top 10 mid-size metro for business attraction and growth. This is being fueled by the immense private sector investment in our region that has led to more than 5,000 new jobs and $3 billion of capital investment. These investments are creating well-paying employment opportunities for residents of Toledo, northwest Ohio, and southeast Michigan.

Old Newsboys Association Awards Toledo Fire & Rescue $26,000 Grant
|
|
The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department was awarded a public education grant in the amount of $26,000 from the Old Newsboys Goodfellows Association.
The Toledo Fire & Rescue Public Education Bureau purchased the Lion Bullseye Digital Fire Extinguisher Training System with the grant money. The training simulator will be used by the department's public educators in schools, businesses, and healthcare facilities for all-ages fire safety education and community training.
"This unique training platform allows for activation of pull station alarming systems and the proper use of fire extinguishers without the danger of live fire or interrupting in-place fire protection systems," said Fire Chief Brian Byrd.
The Old Newsboys Association was founded in 1929 with a mission of “assistance without delay” which is still the mainstay of this great organization. The Old Newsboys provide aid and relief to the financially disadvantaged of northwest Ohio through the distribution of new clothing and shoes to needy children via vouchers distributed by school administrators, police officers, firefighters, and neighbors.

Mayor Doug DeGood
1947-2019
|
|
The city of Toledo mourns with the family of Toledo Mayor Doug DeGood, who died Dec. 1.
Mr. DeGood in 1977 defeated Max Reddish, the Republican candidate, to become the youngest big-city mayor in the United States — and Toledo’s youngest mayor since its founding.
He will forever be remembered as a committed public servant and visionary who enjoyed an active life serving his Toledo community. He was a strong leader who navigated Toledo through labor disputes and fiscal strife. Mr. DeGood is remembered as a quiet, caring, and educated architect of the city of Toledo.
All Toledoans are urged all to celebrate the life of an extraordinary person who truly made Toledo a better place to live.
|
|
The Human Relations Commission, in partnership with mayor’s office staff, has put together a list of available opportunities for people in need this holiday season, as well as opportunities to volunteer or donate.

Before (and After): Toledo Zoo presents 34th Lights Before Christmas
The 2019 edition of the Lights Before Christmas officially began Nov. 22 with the annual lighting of what the Zoo simply calls “The Big Tree”— an 85-foot Norway spruce decorated with over 700 sets of lights for over 30,000 individual LED bulbs in total. But the event itself is the culmination of a year’s worth of work.
