News & Events

Our T-Coil loop is on again to assist compatible hearing aids! We thank everyone for their patience.

As cold and flu season approaches (as well as a popular time of year for travel), please be aware that St. James still has (lots of) masks available in the narthex should you need one for any reason. Some still prefer to wear masks in group settings before big vacations to avoid illness of any kind. So if you see someone wearing one, continue to greet them with the love of Christ, not with suspicion of the plague! And in all seriousness, if you are feeling unwell, we invite you to join us online via our livestream on Facebook or YouTube. Sharing is caring, except when it's the sniffles! Should you need a pastoral visit or assistance in time of serious illness, please contact David+ or the office.

Additional parking options on Sundays:  We want to ensure those with mobility needs, those with small children, and our visitors can find parking in St. James lots. This is a faithful gesture of Christian hospitality so please consider parking at one of these locations:

  • Bruce Drysdale Elementary parking lot, adjacent to St. James on Bearcat Blvd (about 25 spots)
  • The Staff Parking lot, behind the Memorial Garden
  • On-street parking around St. James

Worship & Adult Formation

Joy Comes in the Morning: Adult formation continues this Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Trinity Room. For the next three weeks, we will explore the spiritual experience of joy. Described as fruit of the Spirit by St. Paul, joy isn’t just happiness. Scripture suggests it is intimately connected to sorrow and suffering, perhaps even impossible without it. What does science, faith, and our own life experience tell us about joy and can we cultivate it?

Sept. 10-17: What does Scripture, specifically the Hebrew texts, say about joy? What is Easter or Resurrection joy?

Sept. 24-Oct. 1: What does science and society tell us about joy? What is the difference between joy and happiness? How do you practice or cultivate joy?

Join us on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5960851208

Do you want to serve in worship? St. James needs additional people to usher, read, and serve chalice at the 8 a.m. and 5 p.m services. You must be confirmed to serve chalice. Anyone can read. Please contact David and he will get you in the rotation.

We are also in need of ushers! Contact Patti Brotherton if you are interested.

Gluten-free wafers are available during communion for those with celiac disease or medical issues. You may request this gluten-free option at communion from the priest.

Dedicate Sunday's Flowers in Thanksgiving or in Memory of Someone Special.

Sponsoring a flower dedication for our Sunday services is a meaningful way to honor, give thanks, or remember someone important to you. Contact a member of the Flower Guild for more information or click the button below to reserve your Sunday.

Ministry & Fellowship

A St. James Community Garden Interest Meeting will take place this Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10-11:15 a.m. at Hopewood Garden, home of parishioners, Dennis & Victoria Flanagan. (365 Sherwood Dr. South, Flat Rock, NC.) Parking is available along Sherwood Drive. Please join us outside, under the pavilion. We will share ideas, structural plans and discuss the progress made since the previous meeting. All are welcome to listen and plan for this exciting new ministry!

All are welcome to our annual parish picnic this Sunday, Sept. 17 after the 10:15 service! Our grilling team will be serving up hot dogs and hamburgers, and there will be sides, chips and beverages (vegan and vegetarian options will be available), with ice cream sundaes for dessert. This yearly event is the perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with parishioners from all services. Mark your calendars, and we’ll see you at the picnic!

Sunday Coffee Hours: With the arrival of fall, coffee hour transitions from Lemonade on the Lawn which we have been enjoying in the bell tower courtyard to the traditional social hour held in the parish hall. Beginning September 24, coffee hour will be held inside after the 10:15 service. We would love to have you join the Hospitality Guild or Auxiliary Volunteers. Please contact Sandra Winecoff (sandrawinecoff@icloud.net) or Dorothy Fantle (dfantle@yahoo.com) for more information.

Yoga will take place each Wednesday in September. We will now have one yoga class (formerly known as Focused 45), beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Trinity Room. Participants need to arrive 10 minutes early and be ready to begin promptly. Individuals who might have come to chair yoga are welcome and we will adapt poses into chair versions. Contact the instructor, Dianne Hunter, for any questions.

The Men's Fellowship Breakfast is Tuesday, September 19 at 9 a.m. at Dixie Diner, located at 1724 Brevard Road (Hwy 64). Please wear your nametags.

Justice & Mercy

The Hunger Walk on Saturday, September 23 at Jackson Park will be walked in memory of long-time St. James parishioner Carroll Toole. She was an avid walker and supporter of the Hunger Walk and member of the Hunger Coalition Board. Let's honor her memory and life together this Hunger Walk. Join the St. James team by signing up at St. James on the three Sundays in September preceding the Walk OR online at hendersoncountyhungercoalition.org. If you can’t walk you can still sponsor a walker by donating online, at St. James, or by mailing your donation to Henderson County Hunger Coalition PO BOX 6151 Hendersonville NC 28793. Contact Bonnie Bryan (240) 242-9749 or Alex Kealy (828)552-8107 for more info.

SAVE THE DATE for the Parish Ministry Fair on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. - noon! The Parish Hall will be full of displays and representatives from our many and various parish ministries, to answer your questions and discover how you can participate. What makes your heart sing? Serving in our community or in worship? Working with our children and youth? Caring for parishioners in need or for God's Creation? Sign up for a new group or ministry, meet new parishioners, spend time with friends and serve God together. Come join us for the fun, festivity and good work at St. James!

Our September food collection will go to the Calvary Episcopal Church Food Pantry which provides food and toiletries for households in crisis mainly in Henderson and Buncombe counties. Grab a purple “St. James Recycles” bag and fill it with packaged foods such as canned vegetables, fruits, and meat/fish, pasta, cereals, rice, etc. and leave your donations in the narthex. The pantry is especially in need of diapers (size 4, 5, & 6), wipes, and dry cat food. Thank you from the Outreach Commission!
