Health Center Graduation Ceremony
On July 2, the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center celebrated the accomplishments of several of its staff members. The graduates all successfully completed rigorous grant-funded training related to the development of their specialized field in the medical world. Here's what the Health Center has to say on these amazing individuals:
"BNHC recently held a graduation ceremony for its staff members who completed training under several grants, which promoted career path training and support.
The Medical Assisting grant (through EOHHS) is a workforce development pipeline program. This provides a career pathway for BNHC employees to a career in Medical Assisting. Didactic training with Career Step, an online, self-paced training platform.
The Dental Assisting grant (through MLCHC) is also a workforce development pipeline program. Didactic training with Career Step, stipend, career planning meetings, externship at BNHC, assistance with obtaining Radiology Certification, and DA license.
Medical Office Management and IT graduates were part of the Career Pathways grant (MLCHC) - didactic training with career step
Billing and Coding and Phlebotomy Tech were staff who used their educational reimbursement funds to pay for training with Career Step.
| | |
Employees were also able to use their BNHC Education benefit to take the courses and open new doors to their desired career paths.
We applaud their success and can't wait to see what the future holds for all of them!"

Historical Tidbit:
The Brockton Shoe Museum
The footwear exhibits at the historical society trace the evolution of American shoemaking from the 16th century to the present. From early Indian moccasins, walking shoes, and slave shoes to present-day work and athletic shoes, the entire story is detailed. One of the most popular displays in this complex is the "Celebrity Footwear" exhibit. Included are shoes worn by Ted Williams, Arthur Fiedler, Rocky Marciano, and the size 24 shoes worn by Primo Carnera, world champion Italian boxer of the 1930s. This exhibit also features the footwear of Mamie Eisenhower, former President Ford, and President Clinton, who recently provided the museum with a pair of his jogging sneakers. Another feature of this museum is our unique collection of military shoes, covering the period of the Civil War through the Desert Storm War.

Climate Can-Do:
Eat Local!
The Advantages of Being a Locavore
Better Quality Food - Local produce is usually picked within 24 hours of being sold. These are fresh foods, minimally processed and picked at peak ripeness. Key nutrients like potassium and magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamins C and A can be found at higher concentrations. Antioxidants and polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables are particularly beneficial for your heart, blood, brain, gastrointestinal/digestive, and vision health. A shorter supply chain means fewer steps from farm to plate. Produce ripens naturally, resulting in higher nutrients and better flavor.
Physical and Social Possibilities- Buying from farmers in your community brings increased physical and social opportunities, as well as learning about giving your body quality fuel for increased quality of life! Financially, local farmers support our communities and will be here to provide food should there be infrastructure damage if we buy from them now.
Health - For safer consumption locally, it's easier to find food free from harmful pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers that are standard in conventional mega-farming practices. Small-scale farms usually don’t use chemicals or harmful packaging, as their foods don’t need to travel far. Growers are usually open to discussing their practices, so don’t hesitate to ask.
Price? - For bargain shoppers, the key to finding more affordable options is to buy products in season and support smaller farms. Farmer’s Markets are also often competitively priced.
Check out Mass Farmers Market.org and (free) Edible Southeastern MA Magazine for ideas. Happy Eating : )

| | NJCAA Hall of Fame Inductee | On June 17, 2025, Massasoit Community College alum Jim Craig was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Hall of Fame for his outstanding career in Varsity Hockey. | | |
Craig joined the Warriors team in 1975 and helped Massasoit secure the New England Region XXI Championship. During that season, Craig made a strong impression and was awarded a scholarship to play for Boston University. At BU, Craig won an NCAA Championship. He then went on to become the starting goalie on the 1980 US Olympics team that famously beat the Soviet Union in the "Miracle on Ice" game and won Gold against Finland. Craig later played professional hockey in the NHL after being recruited by the Atlanta Flames. He also played with the Boston Bruins and the Minnesota North Stars before his professional career ended in 1984. He is the fifth athlete/coach from Massasoit to be inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame.

Ecology: 'the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings."
How is our relationship with other organisms and our physical surroundings?
I think: “Am I in a healthy relationship with nature?"
Each week for 17 years, your BuzzAround has connected and shared goodness, to pool our energy around projects that make our lives better.. our homegrown initiatives, our local democracy in action.
And I have seen that work. I have seen organizations and small businesses grow and blossom with the press we have given them. We shared news of ways people can get involved, and they did!
Local actions effect us locally; it's the same with our water, rivers and air; our soil and farms. These things are effected by the food we eat, the plastic and products we use and the construction we approve.
I am a firm believer that a collective of people can make change. And that the survival of our habitat is THE MOST important thing that needs our attention.
