YPL Has New Windows -
Thanks to the help of many people!

"...we are sure we will be saving on our fuel bills in  the
winter and our air conditioning costs in the summer."

By Ann Petrou, Vice President

The Yarmouth Port Library Association would like to thank the voters of Yarmouth for approving the CPA grant for funding new windows for the Yarmouth Port Library. Gary Ellis, Mike Barry, Karen Greene and the Finance Committee, and the Selectmen also deserve mention for being instrumental in the process. Beth Vozella from the Historical Commission, as well the folks at the OKH (Old Kings Highway Historic District), helped clear the way for maintaining the historic appearance of the Library.

The job was awarded to Renewal by Andersen and was completed in six days in late November with a minimum of inconvenience to our patrons. Not only are the windows attractive but we are sure we will be saving on our fuel bills in the winter and our air conditioning costs in the summer. The large window in the children's room has been replaced with tempered glass for the safety of our smallest patrons. The bottom sashes in the Reading Room have also been tempered to comply with current building code. The exterior trim has been replaced and additional insulation was added as each window was added.

All in all, we are very happy with Renewal by Andersen and the product they delivered. The contractor and his workers were also extremely neat in all they did and very kind. They showed up when they said they were going to and stayed on the job until it was finished.

A big thanks also goes out to our sales representative and project manager from Andersen, Paul Sandry. He was our go-between dealing with the contractor as well as the main office. Any questions we had he was able to answer. If you like what you see at the Library and would like to consider some improvements to your own home, please call Paul directly at 508-246-2593. He will come to your home and prepare an estimate for any work you want done. If you decide to go through with the work, the Yarmouth  Community Preservation fund will receive a $100 referral fee from Andersen.

Can you deliver books to the homebound?

If you are available to deliver boo ks to patrons who are homebound, let a staff person know of your availability.

We occasionally get requests for delivery, and although we do deliver to Mayflower Place and Heatherwood, we do not have enough staff to deliver to individuals. It's a good way to make a new friend!

Book Sale Donations
& Under the Spiral Staircase Book Sale Corner

We Are Accepting Donations of Books For Resale.

Some new 2018-19 titles can also supplement our Library collection.

We accept adult fiction and nonfiction, children's books, gardening books, etc. We cannot accept textbooks, encyclopedias or outdated reference materials. The more recent the publishing date, the better for resale, usually no older than 2000.

Books must be clean and free of dust and mildew. Please sort through your books with the above considerations. Thank you to the library patrons who have donated many new bestseller titles to make our booksale corner a very popular place!

Under the Spiral Staircase Book Sale Corner

Thank You to YPL's Loyal Volunteers

We couldn't do it without you - thank you one and all!

As a self-supporting organization, our library is dependent not only upon the generosity of its donors, but also on its volunteers' willingness to help out. With only one full-time and two part-time staff members, it's impossible to overstate the value of our loyal group of volunteers, who fill in at the circulation desk, assist in the work room, and shelve or pull books in the stacks. Nancy MacEachern and Ann Carosso have volunteered for well over 20 years, while some have joined us more recently. We couldn't do it without you-thank you one and all!

Oldies But Goodies Take Center Stage On Favorites Cart...
AND...Look for popcorn at YPL! (Come see for yourself!)

By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian

The YPL favorites on the cart near the new books is taking a winter vacati  on. For this season of early sunsets and indoor activities we're highlighting "classic" DVDs: some from years gone by, like Casablanca, and some more modern choices, like Dr. Zhivago and the Godfather series. We have included a selection that includes "oldies" with stars like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire to movies that we like to watch every year, like Love, Actually. Films in foreign languages that have subtitles are indicated with a small red dot on the spine. Many of these DVDs are donations from our generous patrons. As always, thank you.

We continue our series of community service programs, with a repeat performance by Cape Save scheduled for April 5th. Last year, not only did our patrons receive free energy audits, free weather stripping, and free efficient light bulbs, but YPL received $100 for each patron who had additional work done: an advantageous situation for all concerned. The cost of work done can be reduced by up to 100%, depending on your income.

YPL has been granted funds from the Mid-Cape Cultural Council for a series of programs about "Cape Cod before the Pilgrims." We have lectures and two walks planned, each led by a Wampanoag Indian historian and a 12th generation Cape Codder who is a geologist. These programs will take place in the summer.

It is hard to believe, but we are also nearing our 10th anniversary of independence. More about that soon. We will be celebrating! Check the website for details as they become available!

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say.

Meets the third Thursday of each month at 2 PM

The Library Needs Your Support

"...the Yarmouth Port Library is as open and free                    to the  public as any other Cape Cod library."

By Dinah Wolff, President

It seems like yesterday that I mentioned the upcoming Christmas Stroll, yet when you receive this issue of The Yardarm, many of us will be making plans for Spring. This year's Stroll attendance was somewhat smaller due to unexpected rain, though we, along with other Yarmouth Port establishments, welcomed visitors as usual, offering the plentiful mix of cookies and other seasonal baked goods Strollers have come to expect from our stop on the Stroll route. This event regularly attracts people who might not ordinarily use our Library; some often comment on its inviting interior and express a desire to return.

Maintaining that appeal, inside and out, is the purpose of the Library's Annual Membership Program, an important source of funding which supports our operating costs. Because we receive only a token $500 from the Town of Yarmouth, we look to our public for that support. At this writing, mid-February, we've reached 86% of this year's goal; if this does not include your participation, I urge you to either renew your membership, or join us for the first time. We're very grateful to those who do. I might add that, contrary to what some may have thought, the Yarmouth Port Library is as open and free to the public as any other Cape Cod library.  It's only our financing that is "private"- that, we must do on our own.

Please click here for a 2018 Membership Form

Cape Save Program: A heads-up: since our February 2018 Cape Save program was well-attended, and much appreciated by those who took advantage of its generous discount of a minimum of 75% of the cost of adding insulation to your house, we will again welcome John Vaughn on April 5th. Come and learn what many of your neighbors have already experienced - a warmer house and lower heating bills, with a $100 donation to YPL from Cape Save for every completed installation - a win-win for all.
