Another week, another round of tariff updates, MBEXers --- and this one's delivering its news the old-fashioned way: via snail mail, with changes (allegedly) set to take effect August 1. Here's the quick rundown. Copper tariffs are jumping from 25% to 50%, which could mean a serious price hike for manufacturers and construction projects that rely on it --- especially data centers. Markets held steady this time around --- unlike the April 2nd shake up --- so we'll take that small win. Brazil also landed a 50% tariff, which might not hit your jobsite, but will definitely hit my morning coffee habit. (Yes, I will accept your donations of medium and dark roasts 😉 ☕ 😁)

Five Quick Things To Know / Do This Week:
1.) Brush Up - The next Online Plan Room Demo is this Thursday, July 17 and is open to all MBEX members to attend regardless of skill level with the platform. Learn how to efficiently search and track projects, set up filters and notification settings, and ask questions of staff in real-time. Please be registered by 3:30pm today (July 16).
2.) Backlog Rebound - ABC reported on July 15, 2025, that its Construction Backlog Indicator rose to 8.7-months in June, up from 8.4-months in May. The largest contractors have nearly two months longer backlog than they did one year ago, but backlog has fallen for contractors with $30-million to $100-million in annual revenues.
3.) Know The Signs - Even though construction workers only make up 6% of the workforce, they account for 36% of all heat-related jobsite deaths in the U.S. Heat stress can escalate into major accidents quickly, making it important to recognize the early signs that often go unnoticed or untreated.
4.) Legislative Updates - Come January 1, 2026 in Minnesota, there will be new requirements for employee meal and rest breaks, modifications to the powers of the commissioner of labor and industry, increased penalties for employers that misrepresent or make false statements to the state's unemployment insurance program, and modifications to the Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) law.
5.) WATCH: The Future of Building? - Leave it to China to revolutionize the building game with the world's largest inflatable "dome" standing at 50-meters-tall and covering 20,000-square-meters (that's the approximate height of a 15-story building and the length of nearly three football fields).

2025 Membership Directory & Buyers Guide Now Online
| | We’re excited to announce that the 2025 MBEX Membership Directory and Buyers Guide is now available online! | |
This annual publication is more than just a list of company names — it’s a tool designed to connect, promote, and strengthen Minnesota’s commercial construction industry. Whether you’re looking for subcontractors, suppliers, service providers, or fellow general contractors, the Directory is your go-to resource for building relationships and building projects.
What You’ll Find Inside
The 2025 edition features a complete, up-to-date listing* of all current MBEX member companies, organized for easy browsing. Looking for a specific trade or service? The Classified and Trade Name sections break it down by divisions and categories, so you can find exactly what you need. Whether you’re on the hunt for a new partnership or a reliable vendor, it’s all in there.
*Listed companies include new members who joined between January 1, 2024 - February 28, 2025, and members who renewed their annual membership by January 31, 2025.
Why It Matters
At MBEX, we know that relationships are the foundation of our industry. The Directory makes it easier than ever to make connections and get business done. And with projects constantly evolving and new opportunities always around the corner, having a reliable network at your fingertips can make all the difference.
Go Digital, Stay Connected
This year’s edition is available online in a searchable format — meaning your next connection is just a click away whether you’re in the office, on the road, or on the jobsite. It’s designed with you in mind: quick, easy to use, and packed with the information that matters most.
Find Your Company, Boost Your Visibility
If you’re an MBEX member, your company is already included in the Membership section of the Directory as part of your membership (meaning, it's free!).
Make sure your listing is accurate and up to date. This is a great opportunity to ensure potential partners and clients can find you quickly, and know exactly what services you provide. If you spot something that needs updating, give us a call and we’ll get it squared away.
-
FAQ: Why isn't my company listed in the Classified and/or Trade Name sections?
-
There are additional costs to be included in either of these sections. For each Classified listing, it's $15; for each Trade Name listing, it's $10. These inclusions must also be indicated on a member's Membership Directory & Buyers Guide contract, which is emailed to each member company annually for review in late August / early September.
-
We dove into the details about this process in last week's issue --- jump on over and read about it there.

| | Help Us Welcome Our Newest Members | | |
June brought a great group of new companies into the MBEX community, and we’re pumped to have them with us.
Help us roll out the welcome mat for the newest members of our growing Exchange:
| | Nine Essential Workplace To-Dos To Tackle in July | | |
MBEX is here to help members stay on top of the latest changes to labor and employment law, especially given the rapid pace at which the new administration has been moving on initiatives impacting the workplace and beyond.
Here are the top items to consider tackling in July, based on the latest workplace law developments and upcoming critical compliance dates.
1.) Complete Your Mid-Year Compliance Check
Yes, it's a bit weird to start the checklist with another checklist --- but did you know that a heap of new workplace laws take effect halfway through the year? Here's a cheat sheet to ensure you're complying with various July 1st effective dates.
2.) Assess the Impact of New SCOTUS Rulings
As the Supreme Court's 2024-2025 term ends, the Justices issued some key decisions in June that will affect the workplace. They scrapped the extra hurdle in majority-group bias claims, significantly reduced who can succeed on post-employment ADA disability discrimination claims, and ruled that federal courts lack the authority to issue universal injunctions.
3.) Get Ready for a Wave of New DOL Opinion Letters
The U.S. Department of Labor relaunched and significantly expanded its opinion letter program on June 2nd, offering employers a direct line to legal interpretation of federal laws on wage and hour, workplace safety, and more. Here's what the new program includes, why it matters, and how your organization can benefit right away.
4.) Create an Immigration Compliance and Response Plan
Immigration enforcement across the country has raised tensions at workplaces across all industries, with federal officials ratcheting up the pressure --- what if your business is next? Here's a detailed playbook and two checklists. You'll also want to track the latest developments, such as President Trump's new proclamation that took effect June 9th and significantly expanded travel restrictions on foreign nationals seeking to enter the United States.
5.) Ensure Proper Safety Training
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit offered a stark warning to employers in a June 10th decision: misconduct during workplace safety inspections, especially those involving false records and statements, can lead to prison time and multi-million-dollar fines. Here are the three main takeaways for employers.
6.) Keep Up With HIPAA and ERISA News
A federal judge in Texas tossed out Biden-era reproductive healthcare privacy protections on June 18th, halting a 2024 final rule with nationwide effect. You should also note that a Supreme Court decision earlier this year made it easier for plaintiffs to keep ERISA-prohibited transaction claims in play longer, and just days later a rare ERISA trial resulted in a huge win for a class of 401(k) plan participants.
7.) Update Your Disability Accommodation Request Process
In a decision that may rattle employers nationwide, a federal appeals court recently revived an Army veteran's ADA suit against her employer for delaying her request to bring a service dog to work, despite eventually granting the accommodation. The ruling from the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals underscores that delay alone --- even without a workplace injury or accommodation denial --- may still violate federal disability discrimination law.
8.) Encourage Employees to Take a Break
Employees are now "loud vacationing" by openly sharing their travel plans and using their paid time off (PTO) without hesitation. While this should be welcome news for employers, it also highlights the importance of creating supportive policies that balance employee well-being with workplace productivity. Here are seven tips to help refresh your PTO policies.
9.) Track Evolving AI Developments
Proposed laws and regulations, as well as litigation, continue to impact the way employers utilize artificial intelligence in the workplace:
• Congress is considering a 10-year ban on state AI laws.
• A bipartisan bill pending before Congress would make it illegal to retaliate against employees who speak up about AI-related risks.
• Texas lawmakers overwhelmingly passed a bill regulating AI, and Governor Abbott signed it on June 22nd.
• A new lawsuit filed on June 13th against an AI software provider offers a clear warning for any business using artificial intelligence to monitor or record customer service calls.
• A slew of other federal- and state-level AI regulations that would impact the workplace are being considered by lawmakers across the country. Catch up with this overview of where things stand.

TARIFFS
🤔 Tariffs or Deals? Trump Seems Content With Punishing Levies
Even after President Trump announced sweeping global tariffs in April, some investors and supporters comforted themselves by arguing that the president's goal was still to open global markets, not close them off. The belief, promoted by the president himself, was that he was using his tariffs as a lever to crack open commercial opportunities and the administration would soon deliver dozens of deals that would increase U.S. exports and help American businesses flourish abroad. Three months later, that optimism is being replaced by doubts that the president's goal was ever to strike the kind of trade deals that would open up markets. CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
🎯 How Contractors Can Stay Competitive as Costs & Supply Chain Woes Mount
Across the board, contractors are seeing profitability squeezed from multiple angles. Material prices continue to surge --- sometimes unpredictably --- while tariffs and shifting global policies add volatility to already fragile supply chains. This strain extends into project planning and forecasting. Delivery timelines are inconsistent. Lead times for critical components shift from week to week. The knock-on effect? Quoting becomes more speculative, scheduling more reactive, and margins more vulnerable to last-minute surprises. The way forward is clear: contractors must operate smarter and leaner. Efficiency has become the new edge. Technology, once considered optional, is now central to sustaining profitability and staying competitive. (For Construction Pros)
ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
⚖️ What the One Big Beautiful Bill Means for the Construction Industry
The "One Big Beautiful Bill" (OBBB) was signed into law on July 4, 2025. This article covers four key takeaways for US nonresidential construction, including full first-year depreciation on machinery and short-lived assets, encouraging industrial and tech sector investment. Businesses can now fully deduct production-related buildings upfront, likely fueling a wave of industrial construction. Extended personal tax cuts are expected to raise disposable income and drive demand for retail, hospitality, and entertainment spaces. Increased demand and limited supply may lead to inflation, labor shortages, and long-term economic pressure despite short-term construction gains. (ConstructConnect News)
UNDERGROUND INSPECTIONS | WATER PIPING
🤖 New Tiny Robots Promise to Fix Underground Water Pipe Leakage Without Excavation
Engineers from the UK's University of Sheffield have developed a robot for inspecting water pipes and diagnosing cracks without digging. These miniature robots, also known as Pipebhas, have helped save around three billion liters of water that could have been otherwise lost due to pipe leakage. At present, the only way to fix broken pipes is to dig them up and locate the cracks in the maze of pipes. While it takes a long time to locate the issues, it also contributes to the £4-billion per year that the UK faces. To tackle the issue, researchers teamed up to build these Pipebots to do the job faster and save valuable money. They are equipped with tiny, high-spec acoustic sensors and cameras, which enable them to navigate and detect faults freely. (Interesting Engineering)
CLIMATE RESILIENCY | BUILDING DESIGN
🌦️ AIA Launches New Climate Risk Factsheet
The American Institute of Architects (AIA), in collaboration with AIA Trust, launched a new resource in June for architects facing increasing climate-related design and liability challenges. The Climate Risk Factsheet, available exclusively to AIA members, provides site-specific, climate projections for hazards such as wildfires, floods, windstorms, and extreme heat. The guide will allow architects to better inform resilient design strategies and document their professional standard of care, according to an AIA press release. (Building Design + Construction)
| | Rochester OKs $65M Sports Complex, Fall Start Planned | | |
Read more on Finance & Commerce
Construction of a $65-million outdoor regional sports complex in Rochester --- a project that has been years in the making --- is on track to begin this fall now that the City Council has approved designs for the facility.
City officials said at their last council meeting that construction bids will likely go before the City Council in September. The city expects to commence construction in November and open the new complex in May 2027.
The city's project team includes TSP of Rochester (design), Kahler Slater (design), Bolton & Menk (civil engineering), and Knutson Construction services (construction manager at-risk).
By a 5-2 vote, the council approved the schematic design for the project, which will include diamond and rectangular turf sports fields, pickleball courts, accessible playground, outdoor community gathering places and trails.
The design is for Phase One of the complex. It remains to be seen when construction will commence for the second project phase.
The second phase would include indoor basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness center, community rooms, a walking / jogging track, an indoor turf training and play area, tenant space for a "sports performance partner," and more.
In 2023, city residents approved a sales tax to fund the complex. The city's original plan was to do both indoor and outdoor facilities in a single $65-million project. But after the project nearly doubled in cost, the city opted to move forward in phases, starting with the outdoor facilities.
