Leni Villagomez Reeves, M.D. co-chairs with Cindy Domingo the WILPF Cuba and the Bolivarian Alliance Committee. Other Cuba solidarity work includes the Saving Lives Campaign and the Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba. Leni has travelled to Cuba 34 times, sometimes with groups but usually as an individual. She has close ties there, which help to inform her presentation topic.
She’s active in WILPF locally as well as nationally. She a core member in the Fresno Branch.
How did Cuba got from being a traditional homophobic macho society to the world leader in human rights, including LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights? There has been a cultural as well as a legal transformation in Cuba: from a situation in which homo-phobia and machismo were normalized to the present-day situation where legal rights are assured and attitudes are changing or have changed. How is this achieved? What is it about Cuba and its revolutionary participatory democracy that makes this process possible?
After her presentation there will be a short time for Q&A.
We’ll then welcome announcements – from Board members, Issue Committee Chairs, Branch leaders and everyone else. If you have any question about anything WILPF, this is your chance to ask it!
Zoom in and hear about what is happening in WILPF US! Tell us about what YOU (and/or your branch) are doing]!
Preview of next month: Why is it important for WILPFers to know about Project 2025?
