Moats vs. Inertia: Unpacking the Personal AI Agent Threat

The AI agent catalyst. Meta's September launch of Muse, a personal artificial intelligence (AI) agent designed to act on a user's behalf across digital workflows, crystallized the market's latest disruption narrative.

Moats versus friction. If AI can make consumer switching easier, which business models are truly protected by moats and which are merely monetizing friction?

Where disruption risk lies. While we are skeptical that AI agents will disrupt businesses whose moats were earned through differentiated products, services, or brands, we do see potential disruption risk for businesses that largely benefit from consumer inertia, like forgetting to cancel subscriptions or not wanting to spend time on price comparisons.

"We will continue to ignore political and economic forecasts, which are an expensive distraction for many investors and businessmen. Thirty years ago, no one could have foreseen the huge expansion of the Vietnam War, wage and price controls, two oil shocks, the resignation of a president, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a one-day drop in the Dow of 508 points (-22.6% in 1987), or treasury bill yields fluctuating between 2.8% and 17.4%. But, surprise – none of these blockbuster events made the slightest dent in Ben Graham’s investment principles. Nor did they render unsound the negotiated purchases of fine businesses at sensible prices. Imagine the cost to us, then, if we had let a fear of unknowns cause us to defer or alter the deployment of capital. Indeed, we have usually made our best purchases when apprehensions about some macro event were at a peak. Fear is the foe of the faddist, but the friend of the fundamentalist.”

Over the past 96-plus years, an investment in U.S. stocks has grown over 12,000-fold despite 16 recessions, double-digit interest rates, and several world crises. Stocks have fallen by over 20 percent on eight occasions since 1926. Following each downturn, they have recovered and gone on to reach new highs.

Equities have outperformed other asset classes, but at commensurately high risk. When stocks have fallen, a balanced portfolio has always fallen less. Inflation: A constant risk - One dollar today is worth only a fraction of what it was in 1926. Domestic equities have outgrown inflation by a factor of 789.

Which is worse, buying at the top or selling at the bottom? For me the answer is easy: the latter. If you buy at what later turns out to have been a market top, you’ll suffer a downward fluctuation. But that isn’t cause for concern if the long-term thesis remains intact. And, anyway, the next top is usually higher than the last top, meaning you’re likely to be ahead eventually. But if you sell at a market bottom, you render that downward fluctuation permanent, and, even more importantly, you get off the escalator of a rising economy and rising markets that has made so many long-term investors rich. This is why I describe selling at the bottom as the cardinal sin in investing.

Changing Jobs or Retiring? What To Do With Your 401(k)

One of the most common questions investors face is once they retire or change jobs, should they leave their money in their company's 401(k) or roll it into an IRA?

The answer depends on your particular circumstances, and the characteristics of your 401(k) plan. For example, two factors that can influence your decision to stay or go are your age and how soon you'll dip into your 401(k) for living expenses or other needs.

One option is to roll over your 401(k) balance into an IRA. What are the potential advantages for rolling over your assets into an individual IRA account?

For one thing, if you stay in your 401(k), you're limited to the investment choices within your plan. That may not be so bad if your 401(k) has a broad menu of decent investments that are reasonably priced. But by rolling your savings into an IRA at a mutual fund or brokerage firm, you give yourself access to thousands of different mutual funds, ETFs and other investments.

By expanding the roster of funds available to you, you may have a better shot at finding low-cost funds. With an IRA rollover you'll likely be able to pick and choose from more index funds and more target-date retirement funds than your 401(k) presently offers. Or you can do all three.

Another thing you want to consider is how much flexibility you would have for drawing money if you remain in your 401(k). Can you set up a systematic withdraw plan or do you have to put in a separate request each time you need cash? Can you designate which funds draws will come from, or does the plan administrator pro rate the withdrawal amount across your holdings? Does your 401(k) allow for lifetime annuity payments? If so, are the payments competitive with what you can get outside the plan?

With an IRA rollover, you'll probably find you'll have more maneuvering room. You can pull money out as needed. You can ask the investment firm handing the IRA to pay you a specific amount or a specific percentage of your account value each month. You can use some of your assets to purchase an immediate annuity that will turn that portion of your savings into guaranteed lifetime income.

So before you make a decision, take some time to think about such issues as when you'll need access to your money, how much flexibility you'll have getting to it in your 401(k) vs. an IRA rollover and, of course, how much you'll pay in expenses staying in your plan vs. doing a rollover.

*Fixed annuities are long-term investment vehicles designed for retirement purposes. Gains from tax-deferred investments are taxable as ordinary income upon withdrawal. Guarantees are based on the claims paying ability of the issuing company. Withdrawals made prior to age 59 ½ are subject to a 10% IRS penalty tax, and surrender charges may apply.

Technical Analysis - Helping You Chart Your Path.

Charting#1

Technical Analysis is the forecasting of future financial price movements based on an examination of past price movements. Like weather forecasting, technical analysis does not result in absolute predictions about the future. Instead, technical analysis can help investors anticipate what is "likely" to happen to prices over time. Technical analysis uses a wide variety of charts that show price over time.

One particular type of chart is a Point and Figure chart. A Point and Figure chart is a study of pure price movement in that time is not taken into consideration while plotting the price action. Since only price changes are recorded, if no price change occurs then the chart is left untouched. Point & Figure charts use rising columns of X's and descending columns of O's to represent these price movements. What an investor sees when looking at a Point and Figure chart is the underlying supply and demand of the security. The columns of X's illustrate demand exceeding supply (price increases), and the columns of O's illustrate supply exceeding demand (price declines).

The New York Stock Exchange Bullish Percent Index invented by the market technicians at Chartcraft in 1955 is a popular market breadth indicator that is calculated by dividing the number of each of the 2800+ stocks on the NYSE that are currently trading on point and figure buy signals by the total number of stocks on the NYSE. For example, if 2000 stocks signal buy and 800 signal sell, the value of the NYSE Bullish Percent Index is 72. The value of the index represents the percentage of stocks listed on the NYSE that signal a buy. Since it incorporates every NYSE listed company, it is easy to see how useful this index can be.

Bullish Percent levels that are above 70% are considered overbought, whereas levels below 30% are considered oversold. Strong buy signals occur when the Bullish Percent Index falls below 30% and then reverses up by at least 6%. Conversely, notable sell signals occur when it goes above 70%, and then reverses down by at least 6%. As of October 20, 2026 the current reading of the NYSEBP is 40.99% and can be seen graphically here.
