St. Wilfrid's Answers Needs (SWAN)
Care to join?
| | |
Our St. Wilfrid's family is one of the most generous I know. As part of our outreach, Rev. Nathan is asked by church members for assistance. His discretionary fund has limits. We have created St. Wilfrid's Answers Needs (SWAN) to help. Usually the requests are simple (e.g. laundry detergent, clothing, cleaning supplies, gas cards, etc.). The requestors are anonymous to us. The needs are occasional and often time sensitive.
If you would like to join this group, please contact me per below. If you are already receiving SWAN requests, please let Steven know that you would like to continue receiving requests.
Thank you for your continued generosity and support!

Merci Beaucoup!
Our POP fundraiser: "An American in Paris," last Saturday night, October 24th, in Sacquety Hall was a great success! It had a Parisian atmosphere, flowing wine and beautiful music played by Dr. Heather Moore (who arranged our campaign song: "Plenty Good Room"). Chef Erol Woo’s food was superb and plentiful. BRAVO! With graciously donated wine, beer, ice and supplies, our bar raised $281. We had 62 actual attendees. We’ve collected $2,380 in ticket sales. Six people for health reasons, etc. were unable to attend. Generous donors allowed us to invite several church members. We had 16 donated auction items that raised $1,285. Though many items went for their minimum opening, this was first year that several items had multiple bids! The Opportunity Drawing brought in $330 of which $165 comes to the church.
As always, our An American in Paris event, would not have been possible without the support of our St. Wilfrid’s church family. Special thanks to: Chef Erol Woo and Rev. Nathan, our gracious MC; POP members: Linda Mendelssohn and Linda Eide; Engagement members: Carole Heidary and Dave Dorff; POP members: Debbi and Jeff Campana (our chief bartender and bar coordinator); EPA members: Jim Schweitzer, Chris De Toore, Colleen Montoya, Lily Tisu; Fr. Bill and 10:30am Choir Members: Tammy Bervel and Stephanee Wallingford; Brenda, Timothy and Joseph Smitha; Stacy Palm (and I’m sure to be missing someone)? Please support the local “merchants”: The City of Huntington Beach, Trader Joe’s in 5 Points, Love N’ Bloom, and Classic Cleaners (on Beach and Indianapolis) – all of whom donated to the event. And of course, office support from Laurie Hamilton and Sharan Mercer!
Some preliminary numbers:
Gross Income: $2,380 + $1,285 +$281 +$165 = $4,111.
Expenses: Supplies, wine, beer, ice, decorations, music and auction, etc. were donated. We are still missing some receipts.
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Dear Friends,
Jesus promises us, “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places” (John 14:2). We believe this means that God’s love is wide enough to hold us all, and that we are bound together in holy community.
This year’s theme, Plenty Good Room, reminds us that stewardship is not only about financial and in-kind gifts. It is also about relationships – the ways we are connected to God, to one another, and to our neighbors.
Our parish budget is one way we tell the story of those relationships. Each pledge and gift sustains our common life: children growing in faith, neighbors receiving meals and care, worshippers being welcomed, and friends finding hope. Our budget is more than numbers; it is a reflection of our values and our mission.
For now, I invite you to consider the relationships that have sustained you in this church, and how your generosity can help extend that welcome to others.
There is, indeed, plenty good room in God’s house. Together, let us make room for one another.
In Christ’s service,
Robert Norman Morgan, Jr.
Senior Warden
As of Thursday, October 29th, we have received 42 pledges totally $198,728. Thank you! Those numbers represent 44% of our $450,000 goal, and 35% of our anticipated pledges.
We need you to help create Plenty Good Room!

Bishop Gallardo: “Deacons are vital in every congregation”
by Pat McCaughan
Deacons in active ministry in the Los Angeles diocese are a small but mighty group, they told Bishop Antonio José Gallardo Lucena at an Oct. 17 “Deacon Day” gathering at St. Paul’s Commons.
“Deacon Day was a reminder for me of the breadth and depth of diaconal ministry, from support and advocacy for refugees and immigrants to environmental justice, care for those who are at the end of their lives, patients and hospital staff, feeding people, campus ministry, and engaging their neighbors,” said Archdeacon Laura Siriani.

This week, I went to Palo Alto to learn about the 10-year forecast from the Institute for the Future. This is a planning tool that The Episcopal Church is considering embracing because of its value in using strategic foresight as a provocation to inspire action, build resilience, and shape desirable outcomes today. I am looking forward to learning more about how our church is intending to use this tool, and how we as a diocese can use it to become the church that the world will need in 2036.
I continued developing new relationships with more than 10 meetings with our clergy, meeting my fellow bishops in Province VIII, and by having a lunch meeting with Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe, the Bishop of Central New York. Those meetings helped me to learn about the needs in our diocese, the commitment of our clergy, and other resources available for us in our province and in other dioceses.
Last Saturday we started the Pre-Convention Diocesan Presentations and Deanery Assemblies. In those meetings, we talked about the vision for our first convention with me as your bishop, and we shared the 2027 budget approved by our governing bodies. I am grateful for the staff who is making convention possible and preparing materials, as well as for all the leaders in our diocese. I am looking forward to our time together in Riverside.
I ended my week with a visitation to Trinity in Redlands, and the closing Eucharist at Cursillo. What made the visitation even more special at Trinity were the good people at All Saints, Riverside and Grace Church in Moreno Valley joining us. More than 40 people were confirmed or received. What a great day for our Church!
I had the privilege to join the final worship service at Cursillo, a lay-led spiritual renewal movement with The Episcopal Church that trains and empowers adult Christians to live out their Baptismal Covenant. This Cursillo was offered in Spanish, and their worship was the largest gathering of Latino Episcopalians in our diocese that I have ever experienced. What a blessing!
This week, I will continue meetings with our clergy (close to 50 of the 100 meetings offered so far), have dinner with the leaders of the Standing Committee, and meet with representatives from the Church Pension Group in their first visit with me as the new bishop of Los Angeles. I will also join in a disaster planning workshop offered to EDLA’s staff and join our annual staff recognition lunch (prayers appreciated for all of us at EDLA in our desire to be a resource for the entire diocese).
I will also join in a disaster planning workshop for our staff hosted by our Diocesan Missioner for Disaster Recovery and Resilience, Grace Wakelee-Lynch, as well as join our annual staff recognition lunch. Prayers are appreciated for all of us at EDLA in our desire to be a resource for the entire diocese.
I will also be part of the final Pre-Convention Diocesan Presentation, as well as the timely offering of a Know Your Rights workshop recommended by Sacred Resistance given the increased ICE enforcement we are seeing in our community during this election season.
I will end my week celebrating All Saints Day with the good people of St. Timothy’s in Compton.
I feel grateful and inspired.
Bishop Antonio
