“That’s a Broadway Melody”:

The Evolution of Theatrical Songs

From Stage to Movies and Popular Music

by Lew Potters for the Senior Resource Center

Peanut Butter & Jelly. Maris and Mantle. Batman and Robin

In much the same way these pairs are inseparable, the connection between music and movies is much the same. "That's a Broadway Melody" will examine how songs, originally written for Broadway stage productions, evolve when they reappear in movie versions, or are interpreted by popular vocalists. Aside from the music and lyrics of a song, the context in which we experience it is equally important. For example, the stage production of Fiddler on the Roof’s “Tradition” song/scene is much more intimate than the film version, which has been opened up by the use of camera technology, such as zooms, pans, etc. Likewise, Frank Sinatra’s reimagining of “Send in the Clowns” (A Little Night Music) brings the original stage version into a new context.

This lecture will provide brief background information, beginning with the derivation of each song (“Memory”/Cats/Andrew Lloyd Webber), as well as the film/popular music iterations. In addition, Lew will include an array of video clips/visual images.

Topic: "Stroke Prevent and Awareness"

Stroke Facts, Risk Factors, Stroke Symptoms/Treatment, Stroke Recovery/Rehab

With Aaron Stefankiewicz,

Senior Physical Therapist at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation

Aaron works mostly with patients that have neurological issues, orthopedic injuries as well as amputations.  His passion is directing Kessler's Community Outreach Program. For 16 years he has directed and provided presentations in the community on topics such on "Fall Prevention", "Stroke Prevention and Awareness", "Memory and Cognition" as well as "Caregiver Burnout"

You can prevent a stroke by managing your blood pressure, eating a healthy diet, and staying physically active.

Manage Blood Pressure and Medical Conditions

  • Check blood pressure: Keep blood pressure below 120/80 mm Hg or your doctor's target, as high blood pressure is the leading cause of strokes.
  • Control diabetes and cholesterol: Work with your doctor to monitor blood sugar and test cholesterol levels regularly.
  • Treat heart conditions: Manage conditions like atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) with medical guidance and prescribed blood thinners if needed.

A light lunch will be served and will be sponsored by Carolyn Nestor Cook.   To register please email Lisa at programdirector@srcnj.org
