Something Special is Coming
 Opening Voluntaries in Worship

If you’re coming to the 10:15 service on Sunday, October 11, plan to arrive a few minutes early. The choir has something special in store for you!

In place of our usual opening voluntary, we’ll be singing “All Good Gifts” from the musical Godspell, accompanied by instrumentalists. It’s a joyful expression of gratitude for the blessings of creation and the gifts we receive each day. I think you’ll find it a wonderful way to begin our worship together and perhaps a little different from what you’re accustomed to hearing at the start of an Episcopal service!

This also gives me an opportunity to share a thought about the opening voluntary more generally. Whether it’s a piece for organ or piano, a vocal solo, or an instrumental ensemble, the music that begins our service is much more than a pleasant backdrop as we find our seats. It is an offering in its own right, and an invitation to begin turning our hearts and minds toward worship.

I encourage you to come a few minutes early whenever you can, settle into your pew, and give that opening music your attention. You may find that listening quietly for those few minutes helps you leave the busyness of the morning behind and become more fully present for what follows.

And speaking of exciting music, our Friends of Music Concert Season is almost here! In the coming weeks, you’ll receive a brochure in the mail introducing this year’s artists and performances. I’m thrilled about the season we have planned, and I hope you’ll take a few minutes to look through the brochure when it arrives and mark your calendars.

Our first concert will be Saturday, October 24, featuring jazz pianist Joe Alterman. Joe is a remarkable musician whose playing is full of warmth, imagination, and infectious joy. It promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music and a terrific way to launch our season.

Whether we’re gathered for worship on Sunday morning or welcoming friends and neighbors to a concert, music has a wonderful way of bringing us together. I look forward to sharing all of it with you!

Adult Formation This Fall

September 27 to November 1 — The Corinthians Conversation

A new six-week class led by Emory faculty begins. We’ll explore the issues faced by the church in Corinth and the Apostle Paul’s conversations with its members. Paul consistently returns to the “big picture”: the Corinthians’ embodiment of Jesus. We’ll also look to the emotional relationship between Paul and a church in crisis. Finally, we’ll ask how their conversation can offer support and guidance to the church today as we navigate the conflicts of the 21st century.

How to Read the Bible

Wednesday evenings through October 21

Fellowship at 6:30 PM, Class from 7:00–8:00 PM

The Rev. Larry Varghese, a Hebrew Bible doctoral student at Emory, leads this six-week course. Larry is a phenomenal teacher with a gift for making biblical scholarship engaging and accessible.

The course will explore the various genres found in Scripture, the differences among English translations and how they came into existence, and the Scripture we have inherited. Blending biblical scholarship with the practical questions congregants commonly encounter, the class will equip us with tools for our own reading and study of the Bible.

Joe Alterman Jazz Trio

October 24, 7:00-8:30 PM

Settle in for an evening of live jazz, wine, and cheese in Bishop Commons with Atlanta jazz pianist Joe Alterman. Known for bringing swing, soul, and an unmistakable sense of joy to the piano, Alterman is a longtime mentee of jazz greats Les McCann and Ramsey Lewis, carrying forward their groove-filled, life-affirming approach while bringing a musical voice all his own. McCann called him “a giant,” while Ahmad Jamal hailed him as “a very special artist.”

Alterman has released eight critically acclaimed albums and performed at celebrated venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland, and the Blue Note. His work also appears on two Grammy Award-winning projects, and his collaborators have ranged from jazz legends to Atlanta music icon Dallas Austin.

Beyond the stage, Alterman is a writer, interviewer, and host and producer of The Upside of Jazz on WABE 90.1, where he explores the music, people, and stories that have shaped jazz. At the heart of it all is his piano—joyful, swinging, and alive.
