Serving the Community & Reimagining Justice
Friday evening I visited with boy scouts to discuss local government and in particular, measures for improving energy efficiency. I was also invited to stay for their presentation about the history of the American flag, a topic I always enjoy learning more about. Opportunities to engage with young people who are eager to learn about leadership and service is one of my favorite, and most important, duties as mayor.
Last Wednesday the Village Board passed resolutions related to the next steps for the
Sing Sing Prison Museum
(SSPM). The exciting progress of this venture comes from its mission to inspire folks to reimagine the criminal justice system, as well as the active collaboration with state and local elected officials, and the NYS Department of Corrections.
Much of last week's executive session discussion was related to applicants for Village boards/committees. Ossining is a highly engaged community, and that shows in the number of folks raising their hands and offering to serve in these volunteer positions. The trustees and I will be scheduling interviews with candidates over the coming weeks, with an intention of having appointments ready for the new year. Thank you to all who have applied.

Work Session
This week's work session will take place on Thursday due to Yom Kippur. The agenda includes a discussion of consideration of the Village's renewal of Sister City status with Alijo, Portugal and Sassinoro, Italy, as well as establishment of a similar relationship with Azuay, Ecuador. The Sister City agreements with Alijo and Sassinoro have expired. The concept of Sister Cities was initiated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 to encourage communities around the globe to engage in projects that were mutually beneficial. Many Ossining residents, or their families, originated from these three communities in Italy, Portugal and Ecuador.
