Dear HBCSD Families,
This past week, Hermosa Valley students participated in a schoolwide assembly led by Digital4Good. Students learned valuable tools and strategies to navigate the digital world safely and positively, helping create a kinder, safer online community. The program taught students how to build a positive digital footprint, manage online conflict, and become "Digital First Responders," ready to address cyberbullying, AI misuse, and other digital challenges.
On the same day as the assembly, we also hosted an online presentation for all HBCSD families focused on supporting digital citizenship and online safety at home. If you were unable to attend, we highly encourage you to watch the recorded presentation and review the Parent CAN HELP Guidebook. They both offer numerous practical resources and activities that parents can implement today. Thank you for partnering with us in fostering responsible digital habits among our students!

We are also excited to share that the HBCSD Strategic Plan 2025-2028 is now available! This plan reflects the voices of our students, staff, families, and community members who contributed their insights through our Listening and Learning events and the Strategic Planning Survey last spring. Your feedback was invaluable in shaping our collective vision for the future of Hermosa Beach City School District.
You can view the full plan along with the accompanying data and planning meeting artifacts on our HBCSD Strategic Plan 2025-2028 page.
We are grateful for your partnership and enthusiasm as we look ahead to what’s next for HBCSD!
Warm regards,
Dr. Susan Wildes

Parenting in a Digital World Tip #4: Blocking Websites and Filter Content
This Blocking Websites Tip comes from Common Sense Media.
If you want to prevent access to specific websites and limit your kid's exposure to inappropriate content, such as mature games or yucky material, you can use the parental controls that are built into your device's operating system. Every major operating system -- Microsoft's Windows, Apple's Mac OS, and even Amazon's Fire -- offers settings to keep kids from accessing stuff you don't want them to see. To get the benefits, you need to use the most updated version of the operating system, and each user has to log in under his or her profile. The settings apply globally to everything the computer accesses. Each works differently and has its own pros and cons. This is the best solution if your kids are younger and are primarily using a home device. Check out each one's features: Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon.

Hermosa View School Principal News | |
Another great week in the books! Last Wednesday, Hermosa View participated in the Beach Cities Health District’s Walk and Roll to School Day, with about 140 participants walking, riding scooters, or biking to school! It was so nice walking together and being escorted by our amazing Hermosa Beach Police Department, Beach Cities Health District, and our Superintendent, Dr. Wildes. You may have spotted us with our yellow school bus sign along Prospect Avenue. We would love to make this a regular activity for our families, but we can’t do it without your support. We’re looking for three parent/guardian volunteers to help us with our Walking School Bus. If you’re interested, please sign up using our Volunteer Sign-Up. The “Walking School Bus” slots are at the bottom. Thank you!
Next Friday, October 17, we will be having our View Flag Ceremony, from 9:00-9:30 AM on the blacktop to honor our students who have been “Up for a Challenge.” If your child is being honored, you will be hearing from your teacher, and you are welcome to join us! Please enter through the gate just past the North Gate; no need to check in at the front office. After the assembly, please exit the same way you entered. If you need to stay on campus for whatever reason, please check in at the front office after the assembly. Thank you!
Did you know your child can join View Lunch Clubs after they eat? They are hosted by our very own amazing teaching staff. Please encourage your children to join in the fun. A big thank you to our HVPTO who generously funds all lunch clubs for our schools. We love seeing our students try new things, make friends, and discover what inspires them!
We’re collecting clothing donations for our little ones! Our school is in need of pants (all sizes) and socks to help students who may need a change of clothes during the day. If you’re able to contribute, please drop off new or gently used items at the front office. Your generosity helps keep our students comfortable and ready to learn. Thank you for your support!
Last but not least, this is our final push for the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk! Please, sign up yourself, your dog, your cat, your guinea pig, or whoever it may be! Thank you all so much for your support thus far! Let’s keep Hermosa View in the lead and, most importantly, let’s continue to make our school the best place to learn and thrive.
Warmly,
Dr. Jessica Ghobrial, Hermosa View Principal / HB Preschool Director

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Beach Cities Health District’s Walk and Roll to School Day! It was great to see our students and parents walking through the Greenbelt with our fun yellow school bus sign. We truly enjoyed connecting with families as we walked to Hermosa Vista.
This week, we’re excited to launch our Vista Lunch Clubs. There will be many options for all grades to choose from during their lunch time that might pique their interest. Please encourage your child to join a lunch club starting the week of October 13th. We appreciate HVPTO who generously funds all HVS lunch clubs.
We're still working on getting more walkers registered for next Sunday’s Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk! Currently, Vista is trailing behind View and Valley, but we know we can catch up. Every walker counts, so please register each walker this week to help us boost our numbers.
Lastly, we’re still looking for parent volunteers to help with Morning Exercises. If parents would like to volunteer for their grade level, that would be super helpful as well. 4th grade starts at 8:10 AM, 3rd grade starts at 8:20 AM, and 2nd grade starts at 8:30 AM. Students have shared that they are really enjoying the exercises and that it has helped them start the day focused and ready to learn. If you are interested in volunteering, please email me at gyang@hbcsd.org. I look forward to hearing from you.
Warmly,
Grace Yang, Hermosa Vista Principal

We’re excited to announce our first Valley Flag Ceremony of the school year on Tuesday, October 15, from 8:25–9:10 AM. During the ceremony, we’ll introduce our newly elected Student Council members and formally introduce our Girls Volleyball and Boys Flag Football student-athletes, who are off to an outstanding start to their fall sports season. We will also highlight students who are “Riding the W.A.V.E.”—those who are outstanding examples of the W.A.V.E. values. This month, we’ll focus on students who exemplify the W: We Show Respect for All. At the ceremony, we will hear our Hermosa Valley Band perform and share upcoming announcements with the school community.
A huge thank you to everyone who has already sold raffle tickets for our upcoming Halloween Carnival! Need additional tickets? Simply return the bottom portion of the form that came with your original packet to your child’s teacher or email our Halloween Carnival Chair, Jen Massey, to request more. We’re still in need of Food Court volunteers for 6th and 7th grade! If your student is already signed up, we’d love for you to join them. Your help makes a big difference and is greatly appreciated! Sign up!
Don’t forget! Our Beach Kids Yoga lunchtime yoga sessions begin this Tuesday, October 14, during both 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade lunches! They were a huge hit last year, so we’re happy to have them back. Sign up today for yoga! Side note: Students must RSVP and attend all four sessions - October 14, 21, 28, and November 4.
Lastly, we’re still in 2nd place behind View, despite several new registrations for Skechers! Thank you for those! Let’s rally and take 1st place for Hermosa! Don’t wait, register your walkers today! The Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk is next Sunday, October 19. Go, Valley, go!
Have a fantastic week ahead!
Warmly,
Jessica Bledsoe, Hermosa Valley Principal
