| Why Car Insurance is Still so Expensive Even as Car Prices are Dropping | |
Car prices, including new, used, and rental vehicles, are dropping, but auto insurance rates remain high. This discrepancy is surprising since cheaper cars usually suggest lower insurance premiums. However, rising accident rates and more severe claims have kept insurance costs elevated. Last year alone saw nearly 41,000 fatalities from car crashes, significantly driving up claims and premiums.
Over the past year, car insurance rates have increased by 18.6%, though this is down from March's peak of 22.2%. As car prices and repair costs stabilize, some insurers are beginning to reconsider their pricing, offering hope for potential relief in insurance rates soon.

| Rising Insurance Costs Threaten the Future of Affordable Housing, Developers Warn | |
Rising property insurance costs are putting nonprofit affordable housing developers at risk, particularly in states like Florida, Texas, and California. US Auto Insurers' Strong Performance to Continue Through 2025
U.S. personal auto insurers are expected to see improved profitability through the end of 2024 and into 2025, driven by significant price increases and a moderation in claims severity. However, this could lead to price stagnation as profitability returns, with potential resistance from policyholders and regulators. Insurers lagging in recovery may struggle with pricing actions and retaining customers in a more competitive market. Notably, major insurers like Progressive and GEICO reported substantial improvements in their combined ratios, indicating better financial performance, as auto loss severity trends began to ease.

Homeowners are Rushing to Refinance Their Mortgages After Rates Finally Dropped
The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.49% this week, prompting a 17% surge in mortgage applications, driven largely by a 35% increase in refinancing. Despite this, housing remains unaffordable for many, with high prices and limited inventory. Although mortgage rates are expected to drop further if the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, the housing market continues to face challenges, including high costs and a shortage of available homes.
