Remembering Toby Smith

It is with a heavy heart to have learned of former Albuquerque Journal sports reporter Toby Smith's passing in February. Smith was a multiple-time USTA Southwest Media Excellence Award winner for his work in tennis. For years, he also wrote a fun series that appeared on the USTA Southwest website called 'Counterpuncher' that touched heavily on tennis in New Mexico. Smith was a prolific feature writer on a variety of subjects, but was absolutely a friend to the sport of tennis in the Southwest. After retiring from the Journal, Smith even helped coach a mid-school program in Albuquerque. Of course that experience became feature worthy as well. This line in the ABQ Journal obituary sums up Smith, undoubtedly.

"In his final days, Carson Smith said, the firm grip his father had developed playing racquet sports remained. “It was still there,” he said, “when we were staying goodbye.” RIP Toby and thanks for loving tennis with your words. You served the sport well.
