Sustainable Construction Webinar:

Assessing Environmental Impacts of Construction

April 6, 2023, 12 – 1 PM

Join us April 6th to hear from sustainability experts how construction impacts our environment and why incorporating "green" or "sustainable" practices can not only reduce air polluting emissions and material waste, but also help align your agency to California's future as an environmentally-focused funding and regulatory leader.

This webinar will share the experience and perspectives from a broad range of surface transportation professionals, covering topics like:

  • California's regulatory environment (CARB)
  • Sustainability and the State DOT (Caltrans)
  • Planning & consulting sustainable projects (Moffat & Nichol)
  • Deploying sustainable construction practices (City of Lancaster)
  • Sources & measurement of construction emissions (CSULB)

Practical abatement and mitigation strategies will also be discussed, including ways to optimize equipment vehicle miles traveled (VMT), incorporate green materials, and repurpose existing resources in construction activities.

Learn how to make construction a part of the solution as California advances toward a carbon net-zero future in transportation.

Build a Better Mousetrap:

The 2023 Statewide Competition

CALTAP and its partners at the Caltrans Division of Research, Innovation & System Information (DRISI) are excited to launch another year of FHWA’s Build a Better Mousetrap (BABM), the statewide competition.

Celebrating local ingenuity on a national level, BABM is a federally sponsored initiative that recognizes state/local agencies that are using innovation to solve transportation-related problems to improve job safety and efficiency.

BABM recognizes innovation across four application categories:

  • Innovative Project – Any solution that addresses any or all phases of a project life cycle (planning, engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance) that is locally relevant, original, and creative in thinking.

  • Bold Steps – Any locally relevant high-risk project or process that presents a break-through solution and demonstrates high-reward.

  • Smart Transformation – A locally relevant significant change in any transportation activity/process that is “SMART” (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound) and improves efficiencies.

  • Pioneer – A locally relevant product/tool that is among the first to solve a maintenance problem via a home-grown solution.

Applications are now being accepted through May 5th via the DRISI online innovation platform, where you can upload your agency's submission and browse applications from your California peers.

What you need to compete:

  • Your Contact information.

  • A brief description of the problem you set out to solve, how you went about solving it, and how your solution provided long-term benefits to your department, agency, and/or the community.

  • A photo or two that illustrates your innovation (a 3-4 minute video presentation can also be uploaded).

All contest details are here, but we also welcome any questions.

Take a moment to share your agency's innovation!

Fleet Electrification:

Insight & Approaches

March 24, 2023, 3:00 PM

290 Hearst Memorial Mining Bldg

UC Berkeley

Speaker: Margaret McCall

Manager of Data Analytics

NextEra Mobility

Margaret McCall, Manager of Data Analytics at NextEra Mobility, will present Fleet Electrification: Insights & Approaches this Friday, March 24, 2023 at the ITS Berkeley Transportation Seminar.

This event will not be recorded or streamed.

Public and private fleets across the country are exploring whether to make the transition to electric vehicles. Many technical and economic factors play into the decision to convert to EVs – often, operational savings in the form of lower fuel costs are a key motivator.

Margaret will discuss the primary considerations in fleet electrification decision-making, with a deep dive into energy cost modeling and how costs differ when fueling up with electricity instead of gas or diesel. She'll explore the sensitivity of EV electricity costs to key real-world factors encountered in her work with fleets and will discuss the complexity of valuing managed charging.
