Pharisees' Question
We all know Jesus’ answer to this question from the Pharisees, “What is the greatest commandment?” His answer: LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.
On October 25, my homily looked at this from the perspective of “…yourself.” It is one of the most meaningful messages for me because it is the basis for my leave-taking of you. Here is a bit of what I said.
“…Love yourself – there are numerous perspectives on this. I want to take the
perspective of what happens when we love ourselves because love is our salvation not our possession.
The pharisees were testing Jesus and his commitment to Jewish law. He passed. And although passing was dangerous and counter-cultural, there was still something that moved people toward him.
It was his open heart and their open hearts. He opens a door. How else could the very rich like Joseph of Arimathea, or a benefactor like Mary of Magdala, and the rich, skimming Zacchaeus the tax collector, and whoever else supported his vision continue to stay close and learn His Way along with the lepers and the demon possessed and the hated Samaritans? The full range, the bell curve of humanity was with him.
He opens a door and he calls us forth. He says, love yourself and you will love others. You don’t even need to try most of the time. It just comes out of you…”
The feedback from some present at Mass was encouraging so, I invite you to listen here.
A PRAYER FOR THE PEOPLE by Padraig O Tuama in Being Here: Prayers for Curiosity, Justice, and Love.
Turning to the light
the light turns to us.
Moving toward the source
the source moves us.
Holding on to hope
hope holds on to us.
Jesus of Nazareth,
you encountered many lives
calling people to justice
love and curiosity.
May we – in all our nights, days
and activities – act with more
justice, love and curiosity.
Because this might save us,
and make us more like you,
who turns to us in love.
Amen.
