Our Op-Ed was published in the opinion section of the August 7 edition of The Seattle Times. We hope that the City of Seattle will pay attention to our serious concerns. The Fremont Bridge is a well-known symbol of our community and connections. However, it risks becoming a symbol of the flaws in our regional growth plans if we focus on one mode of transportation over all the others.

| | New Night Market in Fremont | | |
Last week, a new Night Market started popping up in Fremont along NW 35th St between Evanston Ave N and Fremont Place. This Night Market will take place on the last Thursday of each month through October and features a curated selection of vendors selling a variety of items, from crafts to vintage goods and everything in between.
This new market is part of the Fremont Vintage Mall family of businesses, and we already love how it contributes to keeping Fremont hip, funky, and fun!
| | | Fremont's Neighborhood Night Out | |
On August 5, the entire city celebrated Neighborhood Night Out. This national event, promoted by the Seattle Police Department, aims to enhance crime prevention awareness and foster community support.
As you walked around Fremont, it felt like there was a block party on nearly every block. North Precinct Captain Davisson stopped by to greet some of the neighbors.
A big thank you to all of our first responders who serve our community every day.
| | | Fremont Sunday Market Celebrates 35 Years | | | | |
The Fremont Sunday Market is Seattle's first neighborhood street market. It was founded 35 years ago by Jon and Candace and is now operated by their son, Ryan, who has continued to expand and improve upon the original. The Sunday Market sets the standard for what a lively market should be.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with them for another 35 years.
| | Fremont Bridge Bike Counter is getting an Upgrade | | |
@seattledot is replacing the Fremont Bridge's bike counter, which was removed last month after 13 years of service, according to @seabikeblog.
Installed on October 12, 2012, this was Seattle’s first bike counter with a real-time display, funded in part by the Cascade Bicycle Club. It tracked biking activity on both sides of the bridge and became a key landmark for monitoring ridership trends.
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) removed the counter after it recorded its last bike on June 28, as the annual tracking feature had stopped working. Temporary counters have been set up to continue data collection while a new permanent display is installed. SDOT noted that Seattle is on track to potentially reach 1 million bike rides over the Fremont Bridge in 2025, following record numbers in April.

| | | BF Day is getting new windows | | News Tip and Photo: @Fremontneighbor | | |
B.F. Day Elementary School, Seattle’s oldest continuously operating school building, has initiated a $5.8 million window replacement project. Contractors are currently preparing the historic structure by repairing concrete details around the window openings. The actual window installation is scheduled for the summer of 2026.
This project will involve replacing over 200 windows, dating back to 1892, 1901, and 1916, with new thermally broken aluminum-clad wood windows that will match the building’s historic appearance. Given the school's landmark status, it is essential that the new windows preserve the original aesthetic while also providing modern energy efficiency and temperature control for students.

WDOT is more than halfway through the Revive I-5 construction on the Ship Canal Bridge. Please take a moment to complete our brief survey to improve future communications. Survey
Bridge Traffic: The express lanes are functioning well, with around 100,000-104,000 vehicles heading north daily and 94,000-100,000 heading south.
Construction Progress: Crews have begun hydro demolition and are preparing to pour new concrete and install five new expansion joints. They’ve completed over 70% of the drainage work, including 40 scuppers and inlets. Express lane reductions will occur overnight on Aug. 10-14 for crew access.

Emergency Preparedness Resources
Prepare your workplace
| | | |
Businesses play a vital role in our community. When they have a current business continuity plan in place, the impact of a disaster on the local economy is significantly reduced. Statistics indicate that businesses that remain closed for several days after a disaster are much more likely to go out of business permanently compared to those that have properly planned and prepared. Staying operational after a disaster is crucial for a full recovery.
Community-based organizations also provide essential services that residents rely on, making it critical to maintain these services for successful community recovery. Additionally, it is crucial for workplaces to establish effective plans and procedures to ensure the safety of employees and customers in the event of an emergency.
The OEM's Workplace Preparedness Guide provides valuable tips for developing life safety procedures and business continuity strategies. This guide includes easy-to-follow tip sheets, links to instructional videos and planning tools, as well as fillable forms for documenting important contact information and continuity strategies.

A Message from Mayor Harrell
Seattle is a global destination and leader in industry, innovation, and creativity. As your Mayor, I am committed to uniting our diverse communities around shared priorities and meaningful progress on our biggest challenges. Through our focus on a back-to-basics approach like restoring public safety, helping people move indoors, keeping parks open and welcoming, and fixing potholes, we can build a strong foundation and bright future for our city and our families.
We recognize change does not come quickly or easily. But improvement is possible if we act boldly, intentionally – and together. We can change the course of our city if we are willing to work collaboratively, to turn common ground into common cause, to think – and act – big.
That’s my vision for One Seattle, to turn our city’s pioneering spirit into progress, I hope you’ll join me in creating the Seattle we all want to see.
- Mayor Bruce Harrell
