As back-to-school season approaches, we celebrate teachers whose passion for education is making a difference. Carol Russell's journey from a dedicated math teacher to a driving force in Mathkind showcases how one person's commitment can inspire educators worldwide. Her story reminds us of the profound impact a single teacher has.

Carol's Math Mission

Carol always loved math, often taking creative routes to solve problems or complete geometry proofs. Her passion for improving math instruction ignited during a six-year, multimillion-dollar NSF grant project as a middle school math teacher. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics had published new standards, and Carol, along with her colleagues, had many “aha” moments re-learning math they thought they knew.

After three summers of intense learning and classroom application, they began training other teachers. Carol's journey led her to years of service in curriculum and instruction for public schools, helping educators transform their classrooms into exciting, student-centered places for collaborative learning.

Passion and Purpose

In 2012, Carol retired early to spend more time with her family and bring her passion into the nonprofit world. Having lived and worked abroad for 11 years, she and her family have always embraced learning from other cultures. In 2013, Carol and her husband Arnie spent three months in Guatemala, where she facilitated workshops focused on collaboration, conceptual understanding, and active student engagement.

The next year Carol was introduced to Teachers2Teachers, now Mathkind. Volunteering with an organization that shared her passion for quality math education was a perfect fit.

Global Impact

Carol has traveled with Mathkind to four countries, but her passport has the most stamps from Guatemala. She always aims to partner with teachers to explore innovative strategies, solve culturally relevant problems, and enhance students' math skills and understanding.

A memorable moment occurred when a fourth-grade teacher in rural Santa Avelina, who had always used rote formulas, participated in real-world activities. She told Carol, "This is the first time I understand the difference between area and perimeter."

Over the last 10 years with Mathkind, Carol’s dedication has inspired countless teachers to approach math instruction with increased confidence and deeper understanding. As Mathkind grows, Carol is excited to support even more educators in making math accessible and engaging for their students.
