University Museums at Iowa State Announces Fall 2024 Education Programs & Special Events

AMES, IOWA – August 6, 2024 – University Museums at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa offers free events and educational programs open to all who wish to attend. The events for the fall 2024 semester are relevant to exhibitions at the Brunnier Art Museum, Christian Petersen Art Museum, Farm House Museum, Anderson Sculpture Garden, and/or the Art on Campus Collection.


“The schedule of events this semester is jam-packed with artist talks, looks into the fields of conservation and preservation, programs that delve into Iowa history, and special events. The semester kicks off University Museums' celebration of 50 years spanning fall 2024 through fall 2025. Programs and events are subject to change. All University Museums programs and events are free and open to the public. Registration is not required unless noted. Locations of in-person events are listed and all virtual events are on Zoom. The University Museums website and Facebook page will have the latest information. Attendees should check the ISU Parking Division website for the latest parking information.

University Museums’ 50-year Video Release Party

Join Duane Reeves, assistant vice president for Auxiliary Enterprise, and University Museums staff to kick off the 50th anniversary with a live watch party of the 50-year video documentary. Watch in person at the Brunnier Art Museum or join virtually. Consider hosting your own watch party!


Art Walk: Under Our Feet

Anne Pagel, Curator of the Karen and Robert Duncan Art Collection will provide a gallery walk of the photography exhibition Barragán: A Spiritual Master. Pagel will present insights into artist Robert Duncan’s visual responses to Luis Barragán’s elegant residences and gardens of Cuadra San Cristóbal and Case Gilardi, located in Mexico City. 


Religious Pluralism at the Chicago World’s Fair

Curator’s Tour of "Artists of an Era: A New Deal, Iowa Artists, and Iowa State College"

Drawn primarily from University Museums’ permanent collection, the exhibition Artists of an Era: A New Deal, Iowa Artists, and Iowa State College examines the heritage and history these images carry with them. Meet new Christian Petersen Art Museum curator Alison Ranniger, for a tour of works of art from the 1930s and 1940s that offer a view of the early visual culture found on campus and works of art created throughout the federal Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) administered through the Treasury Department.

Cameron Campbell, Associate Professor and Interim Chair of Architecture, Iowa State, will connect the modern masters of architectural photography, with his work, and the work of Mexican architect Luis Barragán.


Agriculture in Context: The 1930s and the "Fountain of the Four Seasons"

Dr. Pamela Riney Kehrberg, Professor of History, Iowa State Univ., will discuss the historical agricultural context of the 1930s and 40s, during which Christian Petersen was creating the imagery for the Fountain of the Four Seasons. Discover what farming practices were typical during that time and compare them to the depictions in the fountain as well as modern practices.
