Today's Stewardship Pearl

STEWARDSHIP has long been defined as the three T’s. What are the three T's?

"TIME, TALENT, TREASURE!"

Yes! How much time is enough? What kinds of talent help?

How much treasure/ money is enough?

Only you can make those decisions with God's help.

MORSEL FOR MEDITATION

Life—the temptation is always to reduce it to size. A bowl of cherries. A rat race. Amino acids. Even to call it a mystery smacks of reductionism. It is the mystery.

As far as anybody seems to know, the vast majority of things in the universe do not have whatever life is. Sticks, stones, stars, space—they simply are. A few things are and are somehow alive to it. They have broken through into Something, or Something has broken through into them. Even a jellyfish, a butternut squash. They're in it with us. We're all in it together, or it in us. Life is it. Life is with.

After lecturing learnedly on miracles, a great theologian was asked to give a specific example of one. "There is only one miracle," he answered. "It is life."

Have you wept at anything during the past year?

Has your heart beat faster at the sight of young beauty?

Have you thought seriously about the fact that someday you are going to die?

More often than not, do you really listen when people are speaking to you instead of just waiting for your turn to speak?

Is there anybody you know in whose place, if one of you had to suffer great pain, you would volunteer yourself?

If your answer to all or most of these questions is no, the chances are that you're dead.

-Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking and later in Beyond Words

BISHOP'S BLOG

Parable by Bishop George Sumner

Sumptuous displays and tasting stations await attendees of the gourmet trade food show. Brie, gouda, fancy cakes, pureed fruit from the middle east, the finest olives, an array of British and German sausages, etc. A taster’s delight. The evening was at last over and the gourmands headed home. (continue reading)

DIARY OF A THEOLOGIAN

Water and Flood by Canon Victor Austin

While necessary for life, water is also a danger—a reality that the Bible recognizes from the beginning.

Once God creates life, he turns to the problem of water. It, water, is just there. We first learn of it when God’s Spirit hovers over it. But then it seems to be everywhere—meaning, there’s no place for God to put created things. So he needs to open up a space in the midst of the water. He does this by making the “firmament”—an odd word; some modern translators prefer “sky” but the problem with “sky” is that you think you know what it is. Nobody knows what the firmament is! It is, just, something that is solid and stretched out, and because it is solid, it can hold water up. And that creates a space, with water above (on the other side of the sky, as it were) and water below. (continue reading)
