Check your State of Illinois Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (BASSET) Status Before the Busy Spring Season Arrives

Dear Chicago managers, bartenders, servers, and security staff,

The State of Illinois requires anyone preparing and serving alcohol or working in security at a liquor licensed business have up to date responsible alcohol server training. All Illinois certifications expire after three years.

Is your BASSET certification current?

You can check if it is for free on the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) web site.

Not current? Expiring soon? If it has expired, or is about to, then February is a great time to quickly renew and make sure you are certified and ready to go for spring and summer sales season at your bar, restaurant, or music venue.

The Hospitality Business Association of Chicago and Diversys Learning partner to offer State of Illinois approved BASSET training courses online for just $10.95. Results are usually uploaded to the ILCC web site within 24-48 hours and this certification is good for three years after successful completion. If you work in a bar with a kitchen or a restaurant State required Food Handler certification is also available online for under $10.

The Internal Revenue Service Releases More "No Tax on Tips" Guidance for Tipped Income and (some) Overtime Pay.

The Internal Revenue service on Monday released their updated guidance for bartenders, servers, and other traditionally tipped occupations on the new tax bills exemption from Federal income tax* on up to $25,000 a year of the tips you receive.

The most recent guidance is available from the IRS.Gov web site.

The Internal Revenue Service has also provided a list of examples on how the new tipped income and overtime income should be calculated.

If you really want to learn more about how "No Tax on Tips" is expected to work this Wall Street Journal article (unlocked) reviews the basic eligibility and big issue.

"The full $25,000 income-tax deduction for tip income starts phasing out once income reaches $150,000 for individuals and $300,000 for married couples. The $25,000 maximum applies to individuals and married couples.

The overtime-pay deduction is capped at $12,500 for individuals and $25,000 for married couples. The break starts shrinking once income reaches $150,000 for individuals and $300,000 for married couples.

The retroactive tax cut will get money to workers faster, but it also poses unusual administrative challenges for the government, employers and employees."

Good luck and congratulations on a likely larger refund as you file your 2025 tax returns this winter.

Millions in Unclaimed Property (i.e. Cash) Available from The Illinois Treasurer's Office.

It is completely free to search for money they may have for you.

Winter is also a terrific time to check the Illinois Treasurer's web site for unclaimed property I-Cash. Old paychecks, security deposits, or uncashed refunds may all be waiting in the Illinois Treasurer's database for you to claim. Over $100,000 returned to Hospitality Association member businesses and their employees since 2020 (and that's just the successful claims we know about). Go search Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs website and see if you have unclaimed funds waiting for you too!
