Voter Service Committee

Your Voter Service Committee has been working countless hours this election season making sure citizens are registered and informed about the November 3 election. Thirteen members worked at twelve different locations to register voters. Fourteen members passed out flyers to businesses and restaurants along 27 different business districts in Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Cicero, and Berwyn. Six students from OPRF HS also signed up to work some of the business districts. Over 500 voter registration palm cards were given to Beyond Hunger for inclusion in food pantry pickups. On election day, fifteen precincts will be covered in Berwyn and Cicero by our poll watchers. We are also partnering with LWV La Grange poll watchers to cover these towns. Finally, our League is once again getting voting poll stars for Julian Middle School's mock election this week. Getting young people ready for democracy!

C0-Chairs Suzanne Poisl and Peggy Kell would like to thank all these members for their hard work in making sure citizens register and come out to vote in this important election. Great job!

Coffee and Conversation

On Thursday, November 12, at 9:30am, join us for a talk on Medical Aid in Dying (MAID), also known as Deb’s Law, Illinois’ new End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act, which took effect September 12, 2026. Coffee and Conversation will be at the Nineteenth Century Charitable Organization, 178 Forest Ave, Oak Park, where we will discuss who may qualify, the safeguards and process involved, and how MAID fits alongside hospice, palliative care, and other end-of-life options. The talk will also explore how thoughtful advance planning and compassionate support can help individuals and families navigate this option with clarity, dignity, and respect for the person’s values and wishes. Our speakers will be Julie Lindblad Iverson, a Geriatric Care Manager and End-of-Life Doula, and Tiffany Noelle Johnson, an End-of-Life Doula, advocate, and the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Wally’s Hearth. She also leads the Oak Park End-of-Life Options Coalition. Free and open to the public.

Honoring Gloria and Robin

Join the National Women's History Alliance for a special gathering today, October 26, at 6:00pm, honoring Gloria Steinem and Robin Morgan and the lasting impact of their work on the women's movement. Come together in online community on what these remarkable women have meant to you, how their words and work have influenced your life, and the moments of awareness, those powerful "clicks" moments, that changed your perspective. Whether you have a personal connection to their work, a story to share, or simply wish to listen, all are welcome. Through shared reflections, personal stories, and readings from their writings, we will celebrate their legacies and help preserve an important chapter of women's history. Registration is free for this webinar. Register here.

Declaration of Independence

Triton College, 2000 5th Ave., River Grove, is hosting a series of lectures on the Declaration of Independence to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The next lecture is Wednesday, November 11, at 1:00pm in the Library Commons on the Main Floor, titled "Republican Virtue and Walmart: The Jeffersonian Republic and Pursuit of Happiness." The presenter will be Anthony Catenazzo, Triton College, and his lecture focuses on the philosophical ideas that inspired the U.S. Declaration of Independence and how they are still relevant today. You can see the flyer about the November and December presentations here.
