Trees are valuable landscape assets. They provide beauty and shade, along with a number of social, environmental, community, and economic benefits to our cities, town, suburbs, and landscapes. For these reasons, trees require an investment of time, money and expertise for the proper selection, planting, care, maintenance and removal. When problems occur, such as storm or insect damage, or general maintenance is required, the help of a tree care professional may be warranted.

A Guide to Handling Peddlers, Solicitors and Canvassers
The Senior Citizens Advisory Committee (SCAC) is committed to helping Morris Township senior citizens stay informed, safe and secure in their homes.
When a Solicitor Comes to Your Door
If a stranger comes to your door attempting to sell a product or service, remember that Morris Township has rules governing peddling and soliciting.
Morris Township Ordinance 3-11 (Municipal Code Chapter 374) establishes requirements for solicitors and peddlers. These include obtaining a permit through the Police Department, paying the required fee, obtaining a photo identification card that must be prominently displayed, and following other restrictions contained in the ordinance.
Violations may be subject to penalties. Suspected violations should be reported to the Morris Township Police Department, which has enforcement authority under the ordinance.
What Should You Do When a Solicitor Comes to Your Home?
Senior citizens are encouraged to take these precautions:
- You do not have to open your door.
- Ask to see the solicitor’s photo identification.
- Never allow a solicitor into your home.
- Never provide personal or financial information.
- If you are uncomfortable or concerned, tell the solicitor to leave your property.
- Contact the police if you have concerns about a solicitor or their behavior.
- Consider posting a “No Soliciting” sign on your property.
- For questions or non-emergency concerns, contact the Morris Township Police Department at 973-539-0777.
Consider Joining the “No Solicitation List”
Senior citizens are also encouraged to sign up for the Township’s No Solicitation List, as provided under Chapter 374-15, Subsection A.
The list identifies addresses that solicitors are required to avoid. Residents who wish to participate can complete a No Soliciting form, available through the Morris Township Clerk’s Office: https://www.morristwp.com/DocumentCenter/View/14038/Do-Not-Solicit-List-Form-2026
For complete information about the No Solicitation List and the provisions in § 374-15(A) through (G), visit morristwp.com, search for “ordinance solicitation,” select “Peddlers, Solicitors & Canvassing,” and scroll to § 374-15 or click here: https://ecode360.com/28453847#28453847
Important Note About Canvassing
The ordinance contains an exemption for certain types of canvassing. It states:
“Any person, firm or corporation soliciting or canvassing on behalf of a bona fide religious, charitable, benevolent, educational or political organization or candidate shall be exempt from the requirements of this ordinance.”
Because these organizations and individuals may be exempt from the ordinance’s permit requirements, the absence of a solicitor’s permit or identification does not necessarily mean that the canvasser is violating the ordinance.
Your safety still comes first. You are never required to open your door, invite someone into your home, or provide personal information to an unexpected visitor.
