Featured Creature

The Queen Angelfish

Queen Angelfish are common to Florida, Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico and most of the Caribbean. They can even be seen as far south as Brazil.

Queen Angels are one of the most colorful and interesting fish that divers and snorkelers encounter. They tend to be shy and difficult to approach, but will occasionally become curious and watch you if you remain calm.

They have a round, dark blue speckled spot on their forehead, forming a "crown" -- hence their name: "queen angelfish."

They are easy to spot as they swim around coral reefs.

The queen angels in this video enjoy hanging out in a giant sponge, even tolerating the presence of a colorful porkfish.

Funny Photo Department

This interesting photo of a tube sponge, taken by fellow diver John Hand, diving in Bonaire, sure looks like someone we all remember. Can you guess who? . . .

Purple Tube Sponge

. . . of Course! It's Cookie Monster, from Sesame Street!

My Great White Shark Memory!

Guadalupe Island, Guadalupe Mexico

This video was taken by underwater photographer Sara Scott, with whom I was sharing cage space, along with photographer Audrey Garbacik, when Big Mama showed up.

Big Mama was a huge great white shark, 15+feet long, and very big, named by the locals who see her return every season. She really wanted to sample the edible goodies (us) inside the cage!

Sara posted a short, exciting video with a nice lead-in!

Here's our video & photo story:

It was our last dive, on the last day of our trip. We'd been hoping for an exciting cage-bump all week, but it hadn't happened.

Sara kept her video going as great whites circled us. Then, Big Mama approached, and slammed into our cage.

Audrey captured this nice, toothy still-shot just as Big Mama approached.

I was hoping to get the same shot, but Big Mama slammed our cage so hard that she knocked me on my butt, and I only got this poorly composed photo!

A crew member helps Sara Scott exit the shark cage after our brief but violent encounter.

I was able to take this photo of Sara since I was the FIRST one out of the cage - - because I'm really "Chicken Of The Sea!"
