Less Stress, More Intentionality, and a Mindset Shift

For many of us summer brought a reprieve from a hectic school schedule and meaningful memories on vacations and time with family. For others of us this summer brought incredible stress and grief, from the flooding in the Hill country or upheaval in our own lives. Many of us are entering this new Fall season full of anxiety and stress.

Stress from grief, loss, and uncertainty can create a lot of anxiety in our lives. I know this from personal experience. For years I had difficulty relating to people struggling with anxiety…I wasn’t an anxious person and felt like I had good control over my thoughts and emotions. But then I started to have trouble breathing, in very mundane moments, and I thought I had the flu. I had scans done thinking something was wrong with my lungs or even my heart. But my doctor asked if I was under a lot of stress. I confirmed yes, I felt stressed, but don’t we all? Then she asked if I knew what a panic attack was—I was dismayed and embarrassed! I’m having panic attacks?! I thought I had walking pneumonia. Where was this coming from and what did it mean?

We are all under a lot of pressure in our lives and it shows up in many ways. Stress is the body’s response to anxiety and can often manifest itself through panic attacks or other significant bodily symptoms. But we don’t have to live this kind of suffering, and we can feel differently—I promise! Understanding how anxiety works will help you to manage and deal with your stress and begin to live more fully and freely. In this month’s we’ll unpack The Anxiety Cycle, which is key in understanding how anxiety works, what is happening in our bodies, and how to calm the body in order to calm the mind.

Many of us feel stressed this time of year and especially in August because of what shows up—dread. The sense that the slow pace of summer is over, vacations and relaxation are gone, and “real life” is just around the corner. Traffic picks up as do our schedules, and many of us dread what comes this month.

But here’s the reframe: if you did summer right, it shouldn’t feel that different from your “normal” life. The transition shouldn’t feel like a crash but a gentle shift. And let’s remember that September is still a warm weather month for us! The light will still linger into evening. And you haven’t missed your chance. Take some time to consider how to weave in your summer mindset into this new Fall season.

In other news, The Barnabas Center had an uplift of sorts this summer—we did renovation of our offices, added a dedicated play therapy and group therapy room, and expanded our waiting area. Below you can see some before and after pictures.

We would love to help you consider what God is doing in your life this Fall season, help you reconnect with yourself or others, and support you in whatever stress and anxiety is present. Please reach out to us to schedule an appointment and take care of yourself this month!

Understanding Anxiety

In the world of psychology, we often tell people that if you want to change how you feel you must change how you think. There is truth to that, but there is also something deeper happening when our emotions escalate. Research shows that your nervous system, in addition to your thoughts, is really running the show. For many of us, we can’t just think ourselves out of emotions, but when you calm your nervous system down, you can relieve your emotions and gain control.

Meet the Counselor:

Jeff Penner

A Little About Me

Hey there! I’m Jeff, a grad student at Fort Hays State University working toward my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Before this chapter, I earned a Master of Theological Studies from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and my undergrad from Wichita State University.

I’m trained through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals and certified as a professional recovery coach. I’m passionate about walking alongside people who are doing the hard work of healing and growing.

Before stepping into the counseling world, I interned at Agape Development Ministries in Houston and ran my own home remodeling business. So whether it's helping someone sort through emotional pain or fixing a crooked cabinet door — I’m all in.

I call Houston home and attend City Church. When I’m off the clock, you’ll likely find me hanging out with my wife and friends, reading something interesting, jogging to classic country tunes, or working on a project that lets me break out the power tools.

What I’m About

I work mostly with men dealing with unwanted sexual behavior; both one-on-one and in group settings. I’m especially passionate about men’s mental, emotional, and spiritual health, and helping guys grow into the people they want to be.

I also work with individuals and couples who are navigating anxiety, grief, life transitions, relationship struggles, or just trying to figure out what’s next. My goal is to create a space filled with grace, curiosity, and zero judgment, a place where you can be real, ask hard questions, and move forward at your own pace.

If you’re looking for someone who’ll meet you where you are, I’d be honored to connect.

Fall Book Club

September 1- November 1

The Let Them Theory

By: Mel Robbins

As we head into the holidays and navigate time with family, The Barnabas Center is excited to dive into our Fall Book Club selection: The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. We will begin 9/1/2025

If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated, this book offers a powerful shift. With two simple words—Let Them—Robbins invites us to release what we can’t control and refocus on what truly matters: our peace, purpose, and growth.

This book is a timely read as we prepare our hearts and homes for the holiday season.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

A Note on Books...

We often recommend books to clients as a resource to dig deeper into topics that come up during sessions and to further personal insight into our current struggles, behaviors, and relationships.

Books can help expand what’s happening in the counseling session and widen our understanding of ourselves and our experiences. And sometimes reading about real-life people or characters and their experiences can provide an emotional release and a sense of connection–we aren’t alone in our experiences!

Plus, reading can be a mindful activity that reduces stress and offers a great escape from our daily stressors. We’ll continue to offer book recommendations through our Book Club as well as books that supplement our Counseling Toolkit!
