Finding Joy in the Slab: Highlights from Our Handbuilding Workshop with Juliann Roush

Written by Carolyn Adkins

If you LOVE to throw and can't be bothered to hand-build, please keep reading. There is HOPE for people like you and me.

Yourist Studio recently sponsored an incredible one-day hand-building workshop featuring the immensely talented ceramic artist Juliann Roush. Hailing from northern Michigan, Juliann is celebrated across the clay community for her whimsical art that beautifully highlights slab work with custom wire-formed stamps and inspirational text.

Designed for potters of all experience levels—from wheel devotees to slab newcomers—the class focused on the detailed, step-by-step construction of a functional ceramic butter dish and its matching lid.

Juliann brought exceptional energy to the studio, using clear visual aids and an entertaining, lighthearted teaching style. Her approachable methods helped every participant step outside their comfort zone and create a unique butter dish.

Attendees walked away with a toolbox of new tricks for handbuilding structure and surface design. For wheel throwers especially, the intensive hands-on experience offered invaluable perspectives and versatile design techniques to carry forward into all future clay projects. Plus, it was fun!

More workshops will be coming to Yourist Studio. Sign up for our newsletter and follow us on Instagram.
